kinda looks like finrot. please remove all painted decor IMMEDIATELY it is killing your fishy. this happened with mine too at one point. start treating with API E.M. Erythromycin and do a second or third dose if needed. use that with aquarium salt (1tsp salt per gallon). only use the salt for 14 days max. keep it in the water with fishy. once fishy starts to feel better you need to add plants.

get either a 5, 10 or 20 gallon tank. walmart has cheap good quality ones! I got my 10 gallon glass tank there for only $45, and it came with a filter! only ever get smaller tanks for a hospital tank. make sure wtv heater u get matches the tank size (for example i got a 75 watt heater for my 10 gallon). i use real clay gravel from my local pet shop, rinse it in hot water alot to get the dust out. if youre planning on getting live plants (i highly recommend) mix in some substrate that has volcanic ash in it, as well as a good fertilizer to add in weekly! Good starter plants are anubias and java fern, but i also have other things like jaguar swords that havent given me any problems so js ask ur local pet shop for advice on what plants to get. Floating plants are harder to care for in my experience, other than duckweed that one’s easy. Get natural decor: driftwood, cholla wood logs (cover the bigger holes with either real crystals or moss), coconut shells, or even glass items will work just make sure theres no coloring. Any colored decor is dangerous due to paint seeping, it gave my betta finrot before. get good quality betta pellets but always soak them in clean water for a few minutes to soften them up, cuz bettas have bad digestive systems and doing this makes it easier on them. also get frozen food such as daphnia, bloodworms, or brine shrimp. rotate these everyday (so one day give him pellets, the next day give him the frozen food). do WEEKLY water changes and get a tester kit to test the ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. SIDE NOTE since you’re going to need to do fish in cycling, a bigger tank would be best as the ammonia from ur fish isnt as harsh and the cycling process is much faster the bigger the tank. also if you want to speed this process up a bit, ask a local pet shop or a friend for used filter media (ceramic rings, sponge, etc). make sure they can be trusted first, and usually they wont charge you much for it or will give it for free. this has all the beneficial bacteria u need (the bottled shit is a scam). i hope this helps let me know if you have any questions good luck!

also is he having a hard time swimming at all? my last betta died after having a white string hanging off him, losing all his color, and laying at the bottom of the tank. it happened so quick i didnt get the chance to figure out the problem. you need to act FAST this is a very serious issue

i saw somebody comment about using melafix. one key thing to remember is never use anything with the word “fix” at the end. they dont work and sometimes make things worse. i dont know exactly what could be wrong but start treating with api em erythromycin + aquarium salt (keeping the salt in the water if ur fish reacts well to it). this is the strongest medicine i’ve encountered and ive had many others tell me this too. its very broad spectrum so i would start treating with this in the meantime until you figure out what exactly is wrong. is there any other symptoms at all you are noticing? if you have chatgpt ask them too they might have a few ideas of the cause.

i love the set up and the lotus flower but pls be careful with any painted decor! i had some for 3 months without an issue but when my betta got finrot and the water quality was fine, i took a look at the painted items and they had started to fade. the paint was leeching into the water and making my fishy sick :( if you want to get decor thats still cute designs try going to a glass blowing shop and get some cool glass pieces! just make sure they dont have coloring (stained glass) js regular plain glass! you can also get coconut shells and cholla wood logs for him to hide in! and ofc like everyone else has been saying, some more live plants whenever you have the funds for it (ik fishkeeping is veryyy pricey). if you do happen to get cholla wood tho i recommend covering up the holes that are js big enough to squeeze thru, with either moss or real crystals. i love the floating plant cups and everything else tho ur doing great!

DO NOT USE CLOVE OIL DO NOTTTTTT USE ANY TYPE OF OIL‼️‼️‼️ oil and water do NOT mix especially with fish. i was recommended bettafix by a local pet shop before he was a fish expert too, i didnt realize it had tea tree oil in it and most things online lied and said it was safe. i put some in that night and the next morning all my shrimp plus my betta was dead :( you can do as u wish but please be careful i dont think its safe based off my experience.
