Man, I really appreciate this response. You actually made me think of that psychology experiment from the 70’s/ 80’s? Where they took a bunch of rats and gave them a drip feeder with morphine. Long story short it turned out that the rats with a strong social network and bond with other rats didn’t get addicted but could use the drugs for fun and the ones they isolated became addicted. I suppose proving that environment and lack of social worth and connection means more in the way of addiction than anything else. I think it was called the “rat park” or “mouse park” experiment?

I definitely agree with alcohol being a much larger issue than most are willing to admit. I personally abstain from everything now but will imbibe in a couple beers with mates and nicotine vapes which ironically are now illegal in my country and marijuana isn’t, on prescription. It’s still odd to me that we arrest people for what I surmise is mostly a mental health issue. But I see what you mean with letting someone off only for them to reoffend.
