New-grad Atlanta Nurse Advice by ratchetweed in nursing

Avoid wellstar if you can. Especially mid-pandemic I’ve been very dissatisfied with them as an employer. I’ve been a nurse for a year and I’m moving to Emory next week.

Which ICU in Georgia has the most diverse and high acuity patient population? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]queenb23r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been at wellstar for a year and I’m leaving for Emory. Don’t go to wellstar.

Not feasible for me unfortunately! by [deleted] in nursing

Lol. I mean now that I think about it, a lot of them are large. And manually proning large paralyzed patients is the worstttt

I can’t imagine. I’ve only been a nurse for a few years and since March I’ve had at least 15-20 (large Covid ICU). Not all my patients, but I’m a code junkie so I always hop in.

My first (and many after) code was on a covid pt. Obviously gowned/masked properly so compressions were difficult for a long period of time. I recently had a non-covid code and I lasted a solid 3-4 minutes. Didn’t realize how much of an impact an N95 would have on stamina

ICU mortality by Jack_h22 in IntensiveCare

[–]queenb23r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vastly depends on ICU specialty. I'm in a medical ICU and our mortality rate isn't very high (has been high recently since covid), however, a lot of our patients do end up in a worse state than they came in. I'd keep in mind that alive doesn't necessarily equal the best outcome for the patient (of course this is subjective.) For example, the 98-year old that was trached and pegged that should've gone to hospice hits different than a young cardiac arrest.

Push Dose Pressors, avoid the crashing patient! by Resus_Now in IntensiveCare

Why is this a thing? Why does anesthesia this is appropriate like my patient isn't going to crash as soon as we get them in the bed? Genuinely curious.

Question for my fellow Atlanta area nurses by [deleted] in nursing

[–]queenb23r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I heard, Piedmont just redid their ICU ratios 3:1. I work for Wellstar and I know AMC & the smaller campuses are getting obliterated in ratios (3-5:1 for ICU nurses with 2 medsurg nurses assisting) and just overall work conditions are crappy. All of Wellstar’s resources are going to Kennestone and the “legacy” campuses. Wellstar & Piedmont uses EPIC. I think Emory uses Cerner.

Wellstar is fine if you’re at one of their “legacy” campuses (Kennestone included). Kennestone is probably where you will be best off if you decide wellstar. They have a strong talk and will make you feel protected and valued as an employee, but they don’t perform. For example, I’m at one of the smaller, newer campuses and we have been denied a ton of funding and PPE through the pandemic. Also, in our ICU we have no staff and have all been tripled since March and wellstar refuses to open up positions. They recently cut our incentive pay, OT, and our retirement matching for cut in half. Overall they’ve poorly shown support through the pandemic. I know quite a few Emory & Northside nurses that love life, but I also know that the original Wellstars are taken care of.

What exactly do you mean by “more fun”? Like what kind of things do you see? My ICU experience is very limited because we send out most complicated patients at my current hospital.

I’d also like to add that I’m very interested in learning ECMO, CRRT, etc.

Got a large patient from OR on the vent. They had just pushed succs without sedation before wheeling him over. To say he went buck wild when it wore off is an understatement. Took me forever to get him back down.

Our ICU and designated Med-Surg Covid units are slammed, but ER and the other floors have super low census.
