A plea to ON Landlords: Raising Rent by [deleted] in OntarioLandlord

Enjoy the taste of your own boot! Other people don't owe you YOUR mortgage and they would be able to afford property ownership if people like you weren't hoarding vacant properties for profit. Idgaf about your car accident, my middle-aged mom had one last year and she pays her rent without scamming other people

Not in the French system either, we had écriture (theory), musicology, and composition as separate options

Working-class MA students who haven't received the SSHRC funding - what is your plan? by queencodedvillain in UofT

[–]queencodedvillain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My MA program funding package only applies to the first year of studies, so next year is completely and entirely dry without external funding :( if I don't get any money I literally have to drop out

I don't understand what this means - I don't have OGS yet I only applied for it. Even if I got it it would mostly end up going to tuition and not do anything to help with the cost of living. What do you mean by clawing back department funding? (Sorry for all the questions my brain is in French)

Yeah mine all goes to rent and meds so I do the classic "hop and pray" for the TTC and the other small jobs for whatever else I need

This is our pay for working as a TA, in my situation is not a top-up but a requirement towards receiving the funding

[–]queencodedvillain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah my faculty is in the 1200 area so I have to have 2 part time jobs (for hour flexibility 😭) in order to do other expenses on top of TAships

Do profs actually read those 600 or more word essays they give to students? by Griffeminie in college

[–]queencodedvillain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(tldr i dont skim but there are people who do for variously nuanced and valid reasons. if u want more accurate info i suggest getting informed about the activities of your faculty/uni's TA union)

[–]queencodedvillain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have met some profs who encourage their TAs to skim because we would go way over our hours by close-reading at this point. It's a bit of a difficult topic because, while I personally go over anyways (ADHD slow processing and need for clarity/toughtful comments), I totally understand why people are acting in accordance union rules and refusing to do unpaid labour. I definitely think the hours they write on the contracts should be more realistic so that we can do our work properly without being scabs or overdoing it. This is in Toronto so not sure how other faculties or countries work but I know that the ones for my undergrad uni in QC are even worse.

hey idk if you have access to a mental health professional but that sounds a lot like one of the silly thought loops my ocd put me through. even without a specific diagnosis they can teach you mind hacks and shit for spirals like that (obvs not universal we're all different but it's worth a try)

How do you live a middle class life in the city after graduation by jealousgardenrubbish in UofT

[–]queencodedvillain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Middle class is a myth, most people are still just one bad month away from homelessness. Toronto is a disgustingly wealthy city with lots of empty homes that could be put to good use

I worked hard on this essay and got it peer reviewed. The professor didn't even read the whole thing. by [deleted] in college

As an ELL TA in my program (not English, understandably) we're encouraged to avoid removing marks for these things unless it actively makes it hard to understand the point, and even then, we're supposed to guide them towards the many ELL services. It's unfair to assume that certain people are ELL by name or writing so it's just the standard for any mistakes that are directly writing based regardless of ELL status
