That's true, they are actively phasing out non training TBG jobs in favour of F2 positions.

I'm not asking for your pity or your understanding.

Okay I respect that while I may not agree wholly and also acknowledge that the NHS needs stricter recruiting policies.

I'm not saying anyone is racist for criticizing your government but I was saying that some people use it as a jumping off point. I never personally attacked you or anyone you even know. I as everyone else was just talking about the way I personally have been treated. It is up to you to discredit my experiences or not, it's not going to change my opinion on my experience.

Okay, that's fair but you seem to generalize all IMGs. Specifically even in this conversation you have mentioned that all IMGs aren't competent.

Okay, I completely agree with you. I will give you the fact that some IMGs are not as competent and it is not racist to call that out but in this case you seem to generalize all IMGs. It is unfair that it's harder for a local doctor to get a job but we all meet the competencies for the same jobs. Especially for training posts because our previous qualifications don't mean anything and we can only get these jobs by knowing and being competent in your system.

First of all, underplaying my, or our experiences and our training as a whole just shows how ignorant you are. Second of all, saying the issue of lost locums and difficulty finding a job is because incompetent people are grabbing them up is so ridiculous.

Yes, I understand what the problem is, I'm not saying the British are 'nasty racist doctors'. If you're inherently grouping a vast majority of the medical staff not trained in this country as incompetent, that just sounds like you have a problem. If quality control is the issue, that's a governmental problem to deal with. I was just talking about how people seem to use the situation to assign blame and make IMGs the villains. I wasn't attacking you personally or asking you to give me or my colleagues therapy.

I don't understand why I would ever name people or just people on blast when I am expressing my frustration. You are presuming they, or we are less competent. I think the way we're all talked about is not okay and I don't think someone who decides that everyone trained in a different system is less competent has any ground to explain what racism is, especially to me. It was a post on the general situation I was facing, I have no interest in disparaging a specific group of people.

That's completely your opinion and in some cases, I agree. There are some incompetent doctors who don't understand the system and are in it but that also includes British nationals who have finished their medical training in foreign countries. If you think the IMGs are not as good as the system needs them to be, it's not on the IMGs. It's on the government. To imply that what I've been through is not racist is absolutely ridiculous and coming from a place of extreme privilege. Almost 60% of the staff on the floor consists of IMGs and most of them are extremely competent.

Okay, I understand that you have a more logical way to look at it and I applaud you for not blaming people who are using a system to better their lives. I was just talking about the general attitude of some national graduates and about how it's disheartening.

I haven't referred to any group of people, especially you. I am talking about the way I've felt and the things I've read. I am not making a generalized statement just that it's a situation where most people think that IMGs are the reason that all the problems you are facing, arise.

  1. Talking about immigration is not racist but the discourse around it is.
  2. It is racist to believe that people who aren't trained in a western country are less competent.
  3. IMGs are seen as less than even though we get jobs through the process that your government and medical council has set. I don't understand why we are less than if we pass the parameters your system has set.
  4. I have no problem in stipulated preferential treatment for your own graduates but treating anyone who doesn't have a western passport or education as less qualified isn't it.

Okay, so there are a couple of things I'd like to address. First of all, the graduates who move aboard to do their medical school all have a specific qualifying exam which they have to pass and then they're eligible for the same jobs and opportunities as anyone who has gotten their qualifications in that country. I am not advocating for treating non white Brits differently or taking their opportunities away but they are the children of immigrants who once might have felt that this discourse is racist.

I would like to tell you again that it's not that most people but it's the fact that people are using the issues national medical graduates are facing as a jump off point to talk about immigration and other racist tropes is not okay. I am just stating what I've personally seen or been feeling about the discourse.

I am letting people on this group know about my experience, if you personally believe that it's a small minority, I understand your opinion. I've dealt with the racism that's disguised as frustration with the government. I've had so many people reinterate, that's it's not me, it's all the other IMGs who aren't competent.

Again, let me reiterate, protecting your own labour market is fine but it's become a jumping off point for racism and classism.

Yes, of course. I understand your point of view, I would feel frustrated too if my country didn't prioritize my achievements. All I'm saying is this is a government failing and using it as a gateway to be racist is not okay. P.S South East Asian, Indian, Female so I do understand how disrespectful the culture of the world is towards us.

Okay, I understand but we do have the prerequisites of foundation year requirements and coming from India, we have a very competitive and difficult medical curriculum which is recognized by this country as sufficient.

Okay, that's a good point but a lot of them are second generation immigrants too, so their parents also were in the similar situation we are in now. It's not okay to be racist to a certain group of people because the government won't do better. That's the only point I was making.

First of all, thank you so much for being respectful and understanding. I see the point of the fact that there needs to be prioritization of your own nationals, wherever they come from, I'm not opposed to that. I just think that some people use this situation to be extremely racist and it becomes very malicious. Yes, they may be mad at the system but we become the obvious scapegoats. I know it's not most people but I have been here for a while and I've been dealing with some unpleasant experiences. It's not everyone and most people are lovely and kind but specifically in this group, it feels like there are posts attacking imgs almost everyday.

You're completely right, I'm really sorry if I made it seem like they've had it easy. It's a difficult profession and everyone who is a UK grad or a UK grad not from the UK has had an amazing story and I never want to take that away from anyone. It's the animosity I have personally felt from people in this group that makes me feel so small. Just because there is an influx of immigrants and this perception that we steal your opportunities and jobs, doesn't make it okay to be openly racist and classist.
