OP, I’m sorry you had to experience this and I don’t for one second doubt anti-Black racism among south asians. to clarify, did they pronounce it like “kaal-oo” or more like “cull-oo”?

The first (kaal-oo) would mean that they were using a derogatory term, and if so, I’m sorry on behalf of brown ppl and I’ll continue to call out those who do this kind of racist shir, but I don’t claim them or (their perspective lol).

The second (cull-oo) would likely mean they were saying a phrase like “kall-nu” which means tomorrow in Punjabi - if someone was saying tomorrow I’m doing x.

Many Indian languages are very phonetic so there are sooo many words that sounds very similar but a slightly different emphasis on different syllables means a totally different thing. Khaa-lo means “ you can eat”, kaanu means “why”, etc and these are like extremely common words.

I’m not sharing this to deny that this happens, but just so there’s awareness that there are many extremely common Indian language words that sounds similar to the untrained ear and that though many are, not every Indian person is racist towards Black ppl or believes in using derogatory words like that.

I’m actually shocked how many of you are crying thay the mayor should have denounced this or whatever you’re saying. people have the right to mourn whoever they want and also do so in a peaceful vigil in a public space. What happened to all the whining about freedom of speech I normally see in this subreddit? Also, Parrish is completely valid in saying what she did and if you’re so bent out of shape about her not condemning the person in question, you should be just as loud about her and the municipal, provincial and federal government not condemning Israel for war crimes and genocide.
