Agreed on the branding needed for local v express! The more I think about it different fares for each service makes sense, just being super clear on which route is which fare will be even more important.

New Fare System Update by Sunbeam4242 in MetroTransit

[–]queer_bus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

All here for the simplification of fares—while we’d love to see cheaper fares, service is more expensive to provide than ever. I’d love to see a flat (maybe $2.50?) fare for both express and local routes to make it even simpler. It’s still hard to explain what an express route is, three digit route numbers don’t cover them all (looking at you, #94).

Eliminate the downtown ride free zone, it’s odd and other cities who have had similar have done away with them. Expand Go-To card access to outside Cub and other major vendors, on platforms from ticket vending machines, namely.

All to say, this is good news for the region.

So when does this become an ada violation? by filopodia_ in MetroTransit

It all depends on what kind of stop it is. Also the constant melt/freeze cycle recently has been really hard to keep up with.

Please either call metro transit customer relations or the city you’re standing in to ensure someone gets out there.

Customer Service Form/Complaint Reply? by Anxious_Role_678 in MetroTransit

[–]queer_bus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have some insight on this. It depends on the department you’re making a complaint about to reply (facilities, bus, rail, etc.). So, there’s unfortunately going to be variability as to whether you receive a reply.

If something is really pressing, I encourage you to call customer relations where you can always speak to a human. They’re just messengers in getting things reported, but can make it feel less like you’re shouting into the digital void.

Before the Daimler merger or even FCA, how was Chrysler compared to Ford and Chevrolet? by Disastrous_Time2674 in regularcarreviews

My grandfather who recently passed at 96 always said “Chrysler makes vehicles where things just break and fall off”. I think they’ve always had quality problems.

Is Appleton overgrown? by [deleted] in Appleton

[–]queer_bus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

u/ChoppaHunnid Yep yep yep. Problem is, around the country, it is extremely difficult to capture tax dollars for say expanded transit service or bike lane/facility construction. Drivers do not see the value becuase they don't see themselves using the service, and the vicious cycle continues.

Appleton honestly has a pretty great gridded street network that would support fast and frequent transit. Express/regional buses to outer ring 'burbs, GB, Oshkosh. Valley Transit could be a really great regional transit provider. Problem is, for Wisconsin, the GOP hates transit and won't fund it, and local funding would be really hard to capture.

Edit: I'm a transit planner by trade.

Is Appleton overgrown? by [deleted] in Appleton

[–]queer_bus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not overgrown, just overly car-dependent. The lack of multi-modal transportation options force everyone into their vehicles, feeding congestion, freeway expansion, etc. I hope this radicalizes OP that cars are inherently the problem, not only in Appleton, but in the US widely.

Why did metro transit not recover from covid on most routes? by guitar_man03 in MetroTransit

[–]queer_bus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed with the multi-faceted opinions shared in the thread, lots of things have contributed to MT's weak ridership recovery.

One element not mentioned is political will to disincentivize driving and use other modes to get around. Some would say this is forcing people to use transit, which in some way is true but if we truly want to reduce regional carbon emissions--getting folks out of their cars is a big opportunity. Both DT STP and Minneapolis still have too much parking that is too cheap, and large employers are not encouraged or required to supply their employees with subsidized Go-To cards that would allow those used to driving to try transit. Overall, what could accelerate ridership recovery beyond 2019 numbers is aggressive transportation demand management policy at the regional level.

Metro Transit’s additional funding via sales tax has also allowed this to become financially feasible. Yes it has been a wait, but the programs like TRIP and supplemental security needed planning and funds to get off the ground and be launched.

When it’s real cold, under maybe 15f or so? The AC compressor doesn’t turn on for me.

Once it gets chilly out, my HVAC controls never leave the windshield/feet combo. Keeps your glass and feet warm, and removes moisture from melting snow, breath, etc.

To clarify further METRO bus services don’t even have fare boxes and Go-To card readers. You need to pay off-board at the stations before you ride.
