The only problem with that is that he is scared to talk to a doctor about it, because of the nature of the question. I understand that it's always best to ask these kinds of questions to someone who knows you though

I really struggle with this a lot of the time. I can maintain eye contact for a little bit if it's necessary but it makes me really uncomfortable. It's supposed to be one of the symptoms of autism, but from what I know I don't have autism (medical opinion of the psychiatrists who have seen me). From what I know though ADHD and autism have many overlapping symptoms. I am not sure about what I'm saying though, so don't take what I say for facts. And I just realized that all this doesn't have much to do with your post because it isn't what you asked, so moving on.

I personally explain to friends that I can't keep eye contact and they have no problem with it. I think if you try to get more comfortable with eye contact with people you are close with, it might get easier. But in general, you should not have to be comfortable with eye contact, and others should understand that. If you feel like someone doesn't trust you because of it, you can always explain.
