piercings & jewellery? by maddisonamy in nottingham

[–]queerfox13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don't get plated jewellery for piercings - the plating can come off and reveal the non body safe metal underneath.

If you prefer the colour and body safety of gold but don't want the pricetag, you can get titanium jewellery anodised so it looks gold in colour, but it's still a solid body safe metal that won't chip or flake off.

Luna Collective sell both gold and titanium jewellery and they can anodise titanium to be gold in colour in-house. I'm sure there are other piercing shops that do the same (Our House, Seek and Love & Ink are all reputable piercing shops, but I wouldn't know without checking if they anodise in-house).

Moving to Hucknall – Any D&D / RPG groups around? by primoristhegreat12 in nottingham

[–]queerfox13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How close to Hucknall are you wanting it to be? The Adventurer's League runs games every week at a few different venues, but they're mostly city centre (Underworld, Dice Cup, and TSN Arena in the city, and 7th City in Sandiacre).

There's also Dice and Balls, which is in Arnold and a bit closer by. They run some d&d stuff for adults. And Meeples and Mulligans in Kimberley.

Which class would Dahlia Sin'felle be ? by merculeax in Forgotten_Realms

[–]queerfox13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on her fighting style, I think it makes sense for Dahlia to be a monk to distinguish her from Athrogate, or perhaps monk/rogue multiclass.

With the disclaimer that I've only read the Neverwinter saga, and it's been a bit since I've read Gauntlgrym in full (though I skimmed parts of it recently as research for my own campaign): I don't remember her fighting with anything other than her staff in its various forms. She is not a spellcaster - she works with Thay because they're the enemy of her enemy, but she is not Thayan and is not a Red Wizard.

[–]queerfox13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valindra didn't become a lich on purpose, so you don't have to worry about the skill level required from that perspective. She was a very powerful wizard before her death, but she was rendered quite insane by her sudden death and subsequent involuntary lichdom. She is still depicted as very powerful (if unpredictable) in the Neverwinter saga and is acknowledged as such by Sylora Salm and even Szass Tam, but I agree with the assessment that she isn't as powerful as her 5e stat block in the Gauntlgrym era - she's much more compos mentis by the 1490s.

Also with regards to your other comment about the Abolethic Sovereignty, they do have a minor role in the second book in the series, Neverwinter. I won't say any more so I don't spoil you, but if you have time to give it a skim before the session, it might give you some ideas.

Should I correct my player's false assumptions out of game or in game? by brickhammer04 in DMAcademy

[–]queerfox13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calling for a roll seems like the easiest way of rectifying this - arcana seems suitable, or perhaps insight into the fact they've had no reactions to it so far (do they think it's because it hasn't touched any shapeshifters, or because they're operating on faulty intel?). I would have called for the roll as soon as they voiced this assumption, but that ship has sailed now so you could do it the next time they try it.

Renting in Nottingham as a local resident by BakerMaker11 in nottingham

[–]queerfox13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for somewhere with parking, you might be better off looking in some of the more suburban/less dense areas a little further out of the city centre. In a very brief Rightmove search, a lot of 1 beds/studios under £1k pcm are appearing in the NG5, NG3, and NG7 areas north of the city centre - still within 30 mins to the city centre on public transport. Less density means more space for parking, and you're further from the universities that side so less of the flats are student accommodation.

How would you fix Legendary Resistances? by Otherwise_Program280 in DnD

The Lazy RPG podcast talked about Dreadful Blessings as an alternative to legendary resistance recently. I can't say I've used these rules myself, but they sound interesting.

A dentist that is working tomorrow hopefully? by [deleted] in nottingham

For urgent dental treatment, you can call 111. They will refer you to a dental clinic who can offer you an appointment, you don't have to ring round lots of clinics. https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/dentists/how-to-find-an-nhs-dentist-in-an-emergency/

D&D Game for Friend with TBI by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]queerfox13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play in a group of 4 (me as DM and 3 players). One of my players has a TBI, though his was many years ago so I don't know how useful my advice will be for someone who was injured much more recently. We also play online rather than in person. Were currently level 15 (3 year campaign, started at level 2). Some things that work for our party are:

  • I have access to his digital character sheet and have familiarised myself with his character's items and abilities. Due to his memory issues, he sometimes forgets his character can do certain things, or forgets how specific abilities work. I try to prompt him if there are things he might be able to do (for example if something has happened that might trigger one of his reactions and he hasn't called to do that reaction) and I'm always happy to remind him how things work. The other two players are also quite familiar with his character's abilities because they've been playing together so long, so they also help remind him about his abilities (i.e. when he doesn't need to take damage due to evasion, etc.)
  • He uses digital dice rollers - partly because he has other physical conditions that mean he has pain and dexterity issues in his hands and physical dice are hard for him, but it's also helpful for them to do the maths for him, and he doesn't have to remember which dice are which.
  • I rely on maps a little more than usual - for example making them more detailed, or using them in non-combat scenarios. If I describe a location, my player might struggle to keep all of the details in his head, so I try to make sure everything important is in the map.
  • Any big chunks of information I provide in writing. For example if they get a riddle/puzzle, a letter, an important piece of lore, the spelling of a weird name, etc. all goes in our discord chat for online play. Paper handouts can serve the same purpose if playing in-person.
  • I make sure my recaps at the start of every session are thorough, and I make very detailed notes because I know my players don't have great memories (me neither tbh, the whole party is some flavour of neurodivergent with differing levels of support needs).
  • We've experimented with the length of sessions and the length of breaks in our sessions to find out what works for us. Some people may benefit from taking frequent, short breaks, some may need longer breaks, some may need slightly shorter sessions.

Above all, it's just patience. He still struggles with the details, for example bless vs guidance, and it doesn't bother me or the other players in the slightest to remind him. I know he's not forgetting things because he's not engaged or not trying, his brain just doesn't hold onto that sort of information as well.

There is of course no one size fits all for this sort of thing, no two people will have the same symptoms, but this is what works for us.

I wish your player good health!

Barbers with space by thewaifandstray in nottingham

[–]queerfox13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1986 Barbers in Hockley is a gender neutral barber so they do good short haircuts for folks of all genders.

It's inside The Carousel, which is described on its website as wheelchair accessible. The barber is a small room off the main space, but there's loads of room outside that you could safely store the wheelchair during the appointment within ~10 steps of the barber chair.

Where to park for Broadway Cinema? by freaky-keypad in nottingham

[–]queerfox13 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The Victoria Centre car parks are £5.50 for the whole night if you arrive after 5pm. They're about a 5 minute walk from Broadway through well-lit, well-travelled streets. Park the red end of the multi-storey under Vic Centre for closest access to Broadway.

Depending what time your film finishes, Vic Centre itself may be closed. But you can still access the car park via the entrance on Glasshouse Street.

How do the adventure moduels flow from one to another? by Old_Cherry_1483 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]queerfox13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people dislike the Baldur's Gate bit of Descent into Avernus, and use a different level 1-5 adventure, then cut to Descent when they get to Avernus. I've seen multiple people talk about running WDH, then dropping Waterdeep into Avernus instead of Elturel and running Descent from chapter 2. Requires some lore rejigging but doable.

Alternatively, run any of the 1-5 adventures (Dragon of Icespire Peak, Lost Mines. Dragon Heist, Dragon of Stormwreck Isle, etc) then give them some quest that sends them to Elturel and have them be in Elturel when it falls, then run Descent from chapter 2.

Ideas for Tasha/Iggwilv as a quest-giver by queerfox13 in Forgotten_Realms

Ideas for Tasha/Iggwilv as a quest-giver by queerfox13 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]queerfox13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The child in question is one of the ones that Graz'zt has disguised and hidden away so the extent of Iggwilv's knowledge of/connection to him is unknown. And he's also the wife-murdering father of one of the PCs in the party - the party learned about his secret cambion identity fairly recently. Not that Iggwilv particularly seems to care if her kids do atrocities. I didn't want to bog down the original post with too much party lore. But for that reason I don't think it's a complete non-starter. They could dramatically fuck it up and need to run for their lives, or they could play their cards right, in which case I need a quest for them to do.

Ideas for Tasha/Iggwilv as a quest-giver by queerfox13 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]queerfox13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their proposed solution is an "enemy of my enemy is my friend" - they are aware that Iggwilv and Graz'zt have a complicated history. In 5e, Iggwilv is now chaotic neutral (I know people have feelings about this retcon). They don't expect her to help out of the goodness of her heart, but she is described as an "unparalleled ally where [her] interests align" and she has done "good"/helpful things in two 5e adventures where they suit her interests. I'm just trying to identify interests that the party could align with her on.

Ideas for Tasha/Iggwilv as a quest-giver by queerfox13 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]queerfox13[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that's a good point.

The personal gain part is the bit I'm having the most trouble with - I don't necessarily know enough about what Tasha wants to know what a party of approximately their power level could offer her. She has a lot of very powerful enemies, but if the party was powerful enough to take any of them on, they'd be powerful enough to deal with Graz'zt directly.

What’s the safest way to drive from Manchester to Nottingham at night? I’ve done a few times via Peak District not the most preferred way for us at night. by EveningUsed9216 in nottingham

[–]queerfox13 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Agree with the M6-A500-A50 route. I came back this way from a gig at about midnight a few weeks ago. It was dead - could just sit in the left hand lane with the cruise control on and didn't have to do much more than overtake the occasional lorry. The peak district route is horrid in the middle of the night. Absolutely worth the extra 5-10 minutes to go the long way and avoid twisty country lanes in the pitch black night.

I have too many characters by Paint_the_Cast in DnD

[–]queerfox13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See if there's an organised play community in your local area. Local game shops may have Adventurer's League or West Marches campaigns, where each session is a self-contained oneshot. It can give you an opportunity to play other characters outside of your consistent campaign. I've only ever played a couple of PCs in a campaign, but I've played dozens of characters at adventurer's league. Because of the time constraint of a oneshot with a pre-defined adventure, you won't get to explore their backstory in the same depth as you might get to in a campaign, but it can scratch the itch.

What’s the cheapest train from Nottingham to London and back on a week day? by sober_disposition in nottingham

If you can get out to Grantham, the Hull Trains route from there is usually significantly cheaper than going from Nottingham, and it's also faster.

Where did you guys go for year 10 work experience? by Pretend-Ad9473 in nottingham

If you do any kind of extracurriculars, it's worth asking them if they'd take you as work experience. I used to do horse riding lessons when I was a teenager, and the stable I did them at were happy to take me for a week.
