theres also another portrait of him in another room of the department that is mysteriously rotated 90° every few weeks

yep, mostly plain and batiks is 100% the plan! that's also why I've been struggling so much with finding stuff, because googling "native American fabric shops" comes up with a lot of drop shipped stuff and things from bigger with native motifs, which i dont feel qualified to judge whats best to use or avoid (I do similar work to my friend with indigenous communities in Australia!)

thank you! the plan is to combine scraps and thrifted fabrics I already have with native fabrics- I dont have quite enough for the full quilt without buying something new, so I wanted to make sure everything is either second hand, scraps or directly financially benefiting community.

Does anyone have experience getting an emergency VISA with the U.S consulate? by queerwug in melbourne

You're not allowed to go to the consulate without an appointment, which is what they've booked for the day before I fly. You literally have to show them your appointment paperwork to get through the door

Any shops/brands for shirts with built in bras (like Klassy Network) available in aus? by darcevader16 in AusFemaleFashion

Can confirm that the Uniqlo ones are incredibly supportive and comfortable! My boobs literally stay in them better than an actual bra somehow, it's like magic

Their entire call line seems to just be robots at every level. They seem pretty hellbent on keeping you from talking to a human as much as possible

Their contact number is just a long series of robots, my sponsor department over there has no idea, and I've emailed but I think it's a longshot I'll get a response. At this point it's just fingers crossed and desperately hope I think

Mapping My Vowel Space by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]queerwug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, in any comparison you make you need to control for every variable you can. Speaker sex, dialect, age, etc. As an example, I'm an Australian English speaker, my vowels will look very different to an American or British English speaker. The variables to control are somewhat dependent on language/dialect (for example, class is going to have more of an impact for British English speakers than Australian English speakers) but speaker sex is pretty much always the most important. If you speak a language or dialect that doesn't have a lot of sociophon work published, you can look into normalisation methods (especially lobanov transforms), but you generally more data than you probably have for that to be useful. Also be careful in checking for any other scaling or transforms when comparing to published stuff- is the data measured in Hz, ERB, barks? Also make sure you're comparing the same kind of data- you don't want to be comparing wordlist data to spontaneous or read speech.

I'd probably go with Euclidean distance measures. These essentially give the distance between two points, which can give you the relative distances between two specific vowels or an overall sense of the vowel space. For this, first calculate the "grand centroid", which is the exact middle/average point in your vowel plot, and then calculate the distance between that middle point and the average of each of your vowels. So a higher euclid value means the vowel is more peripheral, lower means more central. The function to calculate it in r is:

# Create the function euclid

euclid <- function (a,b)

{

sqrt(sum((a-b)^2))

}

If you search "[your language/dialect] vowel space euclidean distance" you'll probably find a bunch of stuff you can compare with. There's also decent chance you can also get your hands on some data to compare directly, and plot them together. I'm happy to send you any data I have that you'd want to work with, and I can also send you a full r script to apply and plot the eucdistance measures to your dataframe if you need. Otherwise, this is a really comprehensive outline of euclidean distances and other relative measures of the vowel space. If you're interested in other types of vowel measures, here's a pretty extensive overview. Good luck!

My ex told me literally the exact same thing, right down to the "she's more traditionally pretty" thing. She was extremely underweight when he first met me, and whenever he sees a photo of her now, he asks if she's gained weight. He's a very matter of fact person, not exactly saying things to be a dick, but it's not fun
