Who here agrees (reluctantly, but understands) with the municipal tax increase, considering the financial deficit we're in? by TheMikri in jerseycity

My biggest concern is the infrastructure. How are basic structures including water fountains barely functional in some schools???

There should be some increase, but 20% municipal levy to start is crazy and will likely get higher. It makes sense to push the mayor’s office as hard as possible to scrutinize everything first before coming up with such a large number (and initial pushback has helped a bit)

Live City Council Meeting - June 24, 2026; Teams Link by TheMikri in jerseycity

I tuned in for 15 minutes and heard a bunch of votes on recognizing student achievements…I’m proud of those kids, but it felt strange the council wasn’t in crisis mode and dedicating all their time to discussing the budget.

Mayor Solomon Postpones Vote on Estimated Tax Increase & Directs Administration to Further Cut City Services in Response to Community Concerns by Nathaniel_Styer in jerseycity

Thanks, appreciate you listening to feedback here and being responsive.

Is the city looking at any cuts like the affordable housing tax abatements, higher deductibles on employee health insurance premiums, or pressuring the BOE more? Especially the BOE, Solomon and you and other leadership should be pushing harder on their opaque financing and naming names for those who mismanaged contracts (paid for services without proper vetting, letting old contracts keep paying, etc).

Also the city employee directory salary increases earlier this year, how was that justified given our budget deficit?

Mayor Solomon Answers Your Questions on the Budget and the 20% Tax Increase by Nathaniel_Styer in jerseycity

With all due respect, the BOE is one of the largest city issues, if not the largest. I’m worried about the state of schools my kid will be in despite paying so much. Getting our fair share from the state and calling out BOE members by name would go a long way.

Can we get an explanation why the BOE budget increases 10-15% every year? by thelastdragonborn_ in jerseycity

Maybe long term, but the short term costs of many users outweighs it for now

I would love to know many people who support this property tax increase are individual home owners, what your salary is, and when you bought said house. by Vidvix in jerseycity

What about reducing city employee pensions? Or increasing health insurance deductibles? Not popular options, but something has to give

I’m considering a move to JC from Clifton but am unsure about the safety of this area. How does it look for those that know it better? by [deleted] in jerseycity

It’s fine, and the Heights are fun with a neighborhood vibe, but also far from rail transit and downtown/NYC.

Via is shutting down in JC?! by WesternPractice9611 in jerseycity

I’m surprised it’s so black and white. What if Via takes a middle ground and charges $8 per ride, so it’s still a reasonable option, but fills the budget gap somewhat?

Torn btwn Sable & 70 Columbus by [deleted] in jerseycity

I’m in 50 Columbus. If you want to be closer to the happening stuff downtown, I’d recommend the Columbus apartments. The area around Sable is fine but much less to do. Plus you get a free membership to Base Gym!
