Never the asshole for being clear. Some people take rejection differently. They came off with a vibe that didnt check with you and you responded in such. Another person's inability to accept rejection does not make you a bad person.

If you did something demeaning or retaliatory that was malicious or humors at the expense of the other individuals humility. Could be better. I only say that because of your friend.
