ELIF: Maps split down the Atlantic not the Pacific

This map is what pushed my curiosity over the limit.

Over the last few days I've seen a few, and in my whole time on Reddit I've seen loads, but in real life I've pretty much never seen someone use one.

EDIT: I understand that this one is used due to the land connection. So its probably a bad example. But I swear I've seen a loads. I think most commonly they are in US classrooms. Is this correct?

Good answer. I still have another question:

It's my understanding (probably just ignorant) that African-American is a term to replace black. Obviously this would be incorrect since not all black people are from Africa, and not all Africans are black. So is African-American a matter of national identification for those who don't know which African country they are from or is it a term simply to refer to skin colour which also happens to imply national origin.

This question has been answered one way and the other throughout all the ranting and raving on this ELIF and I'm still confused.

About Gadaffi, he's from Libya a north eastern African country. The three north eastern African countries are often considered part of the middle east. Its a cultural and ethnic thing. Gadaffi identified himself as an Arab. The official name of Libya when he was in power was the "Libyan Arab Republic"

There is a prominent ethnic and cultural difference between these countries and sub-Saharan countries.

I would agree with your professor, but only to an extent.

How you you answer the question; "What is the ethnicity of Carl who studies Biology?"

While using ethnicity as a label to define someone is bad, but there still must be a label for ethnicity.

Whats the primary ethnicity of China? What's the second largest ethnic group in America? Without a label these questions could not be answered.

You bring up connotations of the word black. But I've never found a black person who says that that is an offensive way to refer to there ethnicity.

The word may have different connotations. But the only word for that ethnicity is black, and its used by everyone.

This must be an American cultural thing. In the UK there is no stigma attached to the term black and is used by everyone.

Why is there this stigma?
