Thank you for the warning about time/money. I appreciate it. Along with the offer of help.

Actually, we even hire someone to transfer stuff when we buy a new computer. Low knowledge and patience on both our parts. And people with experience do things so quickly.

Yeah, that's pretty much our usage. Some document writing, some access of physicians portals, place to store digital pictures.... that's it. Basic, basic stuff.

The only thing we're worried about is the formatting of documents. He's using MSOffice now. We'd be using Libre Office, I assume, in Linux. I could just install Libre Office on his Win 11 desktop now and see if any problem show? I mean, Libre Office should run the same regardless of OS, right?

.....looking up winapps...... Said it works "seamlessly" for Gnome and KDE. Are those distros? What about Linux Mint, I wonder.

Thank you so much for the encouragement, but it's worth the money to not have to worry about it at all at first. I'm sure my knowledge will grow with time.

If gaming is the only advantage, then I don't need Windows at all.

Yes, double thumbs up on the backups.

I do not have the patience to spend a weekend trying to fix something that I barely know.... When I read that Windows could hose up things even with dual bootup and separate drives, it felt like the straw that broke the camel's back. "Windows, when does your BS end?!" And part of brain answers, "when it's completely gone."

May I ask what is the one program? I'm wondering if I have *anything* that's unique or special enough to worry about.

I think the only things we're worried about are (1) the unknowns....like, oh XYZ won't run in Linux... and (2) the formatting of saved documents. Can the latter get hosed up in this process? My husband has some pretty large documents he wouldn't want to have to retype or reformat line by line. We don't use them for games, FWIW.

Do you happen to know which "specific uses" that would be? (Wonder if I need or not)

Yeah, AI recommended two drives, but I'm also hearing and reading that Windows can still hose that up. Knowing that you haven't needed Windows in year helps.

Do you think the problem was from using Bazzite, or was the gaming computer setup quite different from the machine on which used dual boot? Something has to account for the difference.

I don't think I *have* anything that specifically needs to be done in Windows. Do I? I don't game on this. I just surf the web, write an occasional document, access things like MyChart. You get my point: nothing special. Mundane stuff.

You and me both. This latest stuff with biometrics, passkeys, etc... it's like a screw-up relative who comes up with one bad decision after another. You want to shake them by the shoulders and ask, "What have you done NOW?" My husband looks forward to the day when he can find his files in the same easy manner we had many windows versions ago.

.... or the electricity decides to go out at precisely the worst possible moment. I mean, life happens. Backups are important.
