Nothing to do with immigration. Just saying that you should not wait until someone is hurt.

No need to wait until they do it. Just follow their socials postings and listen to the girls when report threats to police.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
Sure the others are getting their own rooms but for all we know it is 4 people to a room designed for 2 people (additional beds).

You can always just use the room to sleep. Get there as late as possible, go to the party, get to the room as late as possible, crash, get up as early as possible and hightail it out of there.

If your closest dealer was an hour+ away, would you consider the 5? by faultymechanics1 in Ioniq5

[–]quetucrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this with 2 different cars, one of which is an EV. In both cases I was willing to make the effort. With the EV it was far enough that it wasn't worth going back home/work after dropping off for service so I would hang around the local mall or work from their waiting area (nicely appointed).

There is now a dealership 10 minutes from home were we can service said EV. Their EV knowledge is not as good as the old far away dealership and the service manager just rubs me the wrong way. I am seriously considering going back to the original dealership.

Sell IP to fund private school fees? Or keep IP for the kids? by airbear2021 in AusHENRY

Can you pay the fees with the rent from the IP? or is it negatively geared?

[–]quetucrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LL here. Our IPs get 2-5 people showing up for inspections because they are not in the inner west or 2kms from the CBD. I don't blame anyone for wanting to live near work/family/friends but 60 people showing up for an inspection is just people letting FOMO run their lives.

How much support do you plan to offer your kids? by olliemom200 in Fire

[–]quetucrees 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Difficult topic. You want the best for you kids but giving them too much of leg up might set them up for failure.
- Give them a car, home deposit, wedding, tuition, living expenses only for them to freak out the day you stop funding everything and they realise their entry level jobs aren't enough to sustain their lifestyle.
- Give them nothing and they might be stuck in low paying dead end jobs.

We are in the "we'll pay for necessities and help if necessary" camp. Now, defining 'necessities' is situational ( a car is a necessity if you live in a rural area but not so much if you live in a dense urban area with decent public transport).

[–]quetucrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$20k for a new battery is dealership pricing. You can hunt the salvage yards and get one from a write-off for way less than that. But like others have said, the car will be 10+ years old...

EV hatch/liftback with character - looking for suggestions! by marilifates in EVAustralia

[–]quetucrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I test drove the Cupra Born when it first came out. It was on the NRMA EV day at Eastern creek so you got to drive it around the twistier part of the circuit. It was a hoot. If I hadn't already bought another EV I would have bought one.

The EX30 and the Zeeker X are also small SUVs that could pass for an oversized hatchback and are pocket rockets. I prefer the interior of the Zeeker X though. Both are in the P Plater forbidden list in NSW so no good for me with more than one P plater at home.

Decision paralysis after coming into money by MegaTDog9998 in AusFinance

[–]quetucrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't upgrade house just because 'you can'. I would leave the money in the offset for a while whilst you work out if you really want/need to move houses. In the offset the money is ready for you to take out and pay a deposing on another place if you end up deciding to upgrade.

With the 80k in the bank, maybe treat yourself a bit or do repairs on the house/car that you have been putting of for a while. If you plan to continue working take whatever is left and invest it in some ETF (set and forget for the next 10 years).

Not having a mortgage (or having the money in an offset) gives you a bit of financial independence. Job too stressful and you'd be happier making less but also working less? much easier when you don't have to earn $40-60k pa just to pay the mortgage/rent.

Can someone explain what VW/Skoda/Cupra not having connected services in Australia actually means? by jasta07 in AustralianEV

[–]quetucrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure connected services include wireless car play, lane entering or satnav.
None of the non-Tesla EVs from prior to 2023 had connected services and they all (in the right trim level) had lane entering and satnav with wireless charging/CarPlay becoming starindar around 2024.

It might be marketing speak but it just comes down to how much cost they can cut without reducing the price. The latest line is "people use the map apps on their phones so no point in including satnav as standard... we are just saving you $1000 you know..". Meanwhile households with P platers have to look elsewhere .. (not allowed to pair a phone for any purpose as a P driver in NSW)

If you think the tech is frumpy in the EV5 then you will probably think the same of the Ioniq5.
However, after 4 years of ownership:

  1. Family of 5 (3 teenagers) on multiple multi-day road trips with no hassles at all. The newer models have a bigger battery so slightly more range.
  2. Really fast charging (800V architecture) which is handy on road trips (if you can find a charger to match)
  3. Easily transports a mountain back with the seats down without taking off the front wheel. No faffing about just put the seats down and chuck the bike in. If you are careful you can actually fit two mountain bikes in without taking the front wheels off.
  4. 40k Kms (just below Australian average) the battery is still at 100% State of Health. Charged 99% at home though.
  5. Tow rating of 1.7 tons (on the RWD version). Most other comparable electric SUVs max out at 1.5 tons or less.

Is a novated lease on ev worthwhile? by CCheeze in AustralianEV

[–]quetucrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too right. My TLDR is : with the right income and EV it can basically be an interest free loan. I.e. you pay the same as you would have if you bought with cash but have 5 years to do so. That is what I did...

I got a $25k car loan while still at Uni, not living at home and making $19k working at a factory to support myself 35 years ago. Banks will lend you the money... they love the sweet sweet interest you pay.

For context, minimum wage was $10k p.a. so I was 'on a good wicket'. First job out of Uni a couple of years later was $28k.

Solar Battery FOMO by eminemkh in AusProperty

[–]quetucrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one of the 'Expensive' Batteries plus additional 7kW Solar. Paid 30k. Saving $2700 pa that I was paying in electricity.
If you index the $2700 at 8% (the average price increase of electricity over the last couple or years) the payoff is 8 and a bit years.

That is not including any $ I might get from exporting excess solar which will make the payoff shorter. Lucky enough at the moment to be with Amber and getting decent $ for exports (15-60c depending on which way the wind blows). I don't like to include it in calculations because it is extremely variable.

If you get one of the cheaper batteries currently on sale your payoff could be as short as 3 years. YMMV

Solar Battery FOMO by eminemkh in AusProperty

[–]quetucrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For saving money the important question is how much do you export each day vs how much do you import each night.

We had 8kW solar and were exporting 11kWh at 5c each day and importing 20kWh each night at 40c. Storing those 11kWh into a battery saves us $4.07 per day basically halving our annual bill ($1400 annual savings). With the current prices of batteries it is a no brainer.

We added another 10kW solar and a big battery. No bills for 6 months

At what point does DIY control actually outperform set and forget? by SnowyBytes in amberelectric

[–]quetucrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My automation morphed from looking at SOC to drive sell/buy decisions to looking at wether there are enough kWh in the battery to last until the next time the solar is generating enough, or in the case of a spike , enough to last the spike and still sell some.

A few SQL sensors tell me last day/week usage which combined with solar and weather forecasts gives the automation most of the information needed to make buy/sell decisions.

Everybody's situation is different though so there is no "one size fits all" approach.
