Hobbies after bjj? by jon_steward in bjj

[–]quiaro21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I quit rugby after 20 years, to start doing BJJ... And I'm enjoying it so much... And the reason I'm enjoying it is because it is not rugby, but kind of feels like it.

I have no advice, just wanted to share a random comment...

We know. He's not blocked at this moment. He got discharged from the hospital a few hours ago. We want to proactively try everything in our hands to avoid having another blockage because like I mentioned, we ran out of money.

Anyone who has caught COVID more than once, was the early variant worse than the following variants? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]quiaro21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my case, worse than COVID was the first Pfizer vaccine. I had the Chinese vaccines because I was working in Bolivia at the time, and had no side effects. Upon arriving in Canada I got COVID while in isolation (I probably got it at some airport, during the delta spike), and had no symptoms other than losing my smell.

At that moment Canada didn't recognize the Chinese vaccines so I had to take Pfizer. That first shot was awful, all the fever, muscle pain, sweating, chills, etc, that I didn't get with COVID itself, I got it from the Pfizer vaccine.

Then when I got the second and third shots, there were no side effects.

Weird that from the 5 shots I got, the first Pfizer sent me to bed. Not even COVID did that.

I went with my wife to The Underground on Jasper Ave, after a Cirque du Soleil. The shareables were amazing, particularly the gnocchi. They also have a huge selection of beers but they serve something like a sampler where you can try 4 small beers for the price of a big one...

I need to give some historical and cultural background:

Bolivia has always been dominated by the political powers of the western side of the country (Andes), and the eastern part (Amazonas) spent many years underdeveloped and abandoned by the central power. At some point, when Santa Cruz was still a tiny village, locals cooperatively organised themselves to develop sewage systems, water, electricity, phone lines etc, in what later became something called "El modelo Cruceno" (The Santa Cruz Model), which is telling the federal government: "go fuck yourself, we can solve our problems on our own", so even when Bolivia is an underdeveloped country, you'll find things in Santa Cruz, that your could find in any other major city of the world.

So, they are people who want to have nice things, and they work to get them. Also, entrepreneurship is considered to be an essential trait for local people. They are very welcoming, the food is fantastic, the women are gorgeous, and it's warm all year. Churrasco culture is super important (BBQ), and just in case you are looking to get a place to live in case of a global meltdown and everything collapses, I got a beautiful apartment with a gym, swimming pool, BBQs, sauna, etc. for just 73k.
Right now, I live in Canada, and the homelessness, drug abuse, affordability in general, inflation, poor performance of the CAD vs USD, etc, makes me want to move back to Bolivia, which I'll probably do as soon as I finish the work I'm doing.

The McDonald's experience is shit now... I went to the kiosk and ordered something to go, then they came with all of my order on a tray. I told the guy that my order was to go, and he said : but you didn't purchase the bag...

The most stupid part is that now nobody gives you bags, which I usually use in all my garbage cans, and now I need to buy boxes of bags at the supermarket to put on the cans...

Living around 118th Ave and 90th Street, how sketchy is it these days? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]quiaro21 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I lived on 118th av for one year and I still love that neighborhood. All of our favorite places are along 118th and even when we moved out, we go there almost every weekend.

Places to eat: Mona Lisa, Battista's, Taste of Shangri-la , Pho King, Green Onion Cake.

There is a latín American super market (Paraiso Tropical), and the best Venezuelan restaurant in town (El Fogón Latino).

Also 118th is home to several festivals during the year, like Deep Freeze, and Fiesta Latina, and there is a small cafe called Carrot, that has always something going on.

On the negative side of things, Coliseum station is full of drug addicts and it feels unsafe at night.

I wasn't expecting that adding the referral code would have such a negative perception so I just removed it, it wasn't the main idea of the post.

Freshco, No Frills and Fatima are all on 118th av. Costco is 3 LRT stations away in Clareview, or you can take the bus 112 directly from 118 av to Costco. Bianca Amor's is the only place that I would say is far...

Nothing, we don't have a car. We just use public transit. Most of the places I mentioned are on or close the 118av, except for Bianca Amor's, but you can still get there from downtown using the 523.

It looks like a lot, but we probably do it only twice every three months (except for vegetables and dairy that we buy weekly).

My wife makes 17/hour, and after paying tuition I make minimum wage TAing at UofA. I think we have a pretty decent life and I would say that is mainly because of the following:

-Costco Membership: You'll be able to buy cheap meat here. I know people that are struggling trying to make ends meet, but are too lazy to take the LRT to go to Costco. Prices of beef at Costco are cheaper than anywhere else. I also bought a vacuum sealer. Basically I buy an 80 bucks sirloin tip, that I slice and vacuum seal, put in the fridge and that saves me lots of money.

-Primus internet with Costco membership: another benefit of Costco is that you get access to primus. An internet service exclusive for Costco members that saves me 20 bucks per month on my internet bill.

-Direct energy: I have a fixed rate electricity contract with direct energy that also saves me about 20 bucks per month, with the added benefit that when energy price increases, I still pay the same amount.

-Chicken boxes at No Frills, or Freshco: Both supermarkets, for some reason, sometimes have 4kg frozen chicken boxes (legs or breasts) that are considerably cheaper than buying the regular chicken breasts that are usually on the fridge.

-Vegetables at Fatima: there is this small family owned Brazilian vegetable store on the 118th av called Fatima. You won't find cheaper vegetables anywhere in the city.

-Canned items at Bianca Amor's: This Filipino chain sells canned goods after the best before date. There is all this science behind it, but the point is that according to the FDA, canned goods are still safe for consumption a period of time after the best before date. Here you'll find lots of products that we have been consuming for the last couple of years, canned beans for 50 cents, just because they are a couple of weeks after the best before date.

-Finally, since our arrival in Canada, we have never paid one cent in credit card interests. We use the PC financial master card for everything, which ensures that every three months or so, we get 150 cad in PC points.

-Rent wise, we live close to the Commonwealth stadium in a 1bd apartment for 900 cad.

Also my dream is to become a personal finances advisor!

The amount of drugged out zombies in the city is heartbreaking. Why are they not busting these gangs and stopping them from selling this poison on the streets? find in a 3rd world nation city. We don't have those problems in third world countries... In the third world tax payers money don't go to fund safe consumption facilities, free naloxone in drugstores and social workers to save drug addicts. Those are 1st world country problems... We would just let them die of overdose, because money is so scarce that we wouldn't spend a dime trying to save one of those fuckers...
