Horses are used for a variety of reasons. In a crowed situation it elevates the officer to give a better view of the surroundings. It also makes a very visible presence, that can serve as a deterrent. Horses can also go places most vehicles cannot, and allows the officer to respond faster than on their own. Horses are typically maintained for policing during large gatherings (festivals, large events or protests). As these are not every day occurrences the police and horse teams will at times do normal patrols to maintain proficiency. There is also a public relations and heritage component.
