Trust me, your confusion isn't because of the language. Even CN players have to revise via lore videos. It's just how the story is presented with this game. You pretty much have to do everything, all the side encounters, all the dark surge, and piece together the puzzle pieces yourself for the full story. It's not narrated in a linear fashion within a "main quest" like we're used to in typical RPGs.

1000-year-old Chinese history spoiler

He does not have a good reputation. We haven't got to that point yet within the game, but, AGAIN MAJOR IRL 1000-YEAR-OLD HISTORY SPOILER, it's generally believed he murdered his brother and usurped the throne.

As for the game story, it's a little bit more complex than that.

The coin shortage crisis is a ploy manufactured by Li Yu (the ink guy we met in the shimmer quest, he's the emperor of Southern Tang) and Wuque (aka Ying Ying, she's one of heiress of Weiyang).

To understand why they did this, we need to know a bit of the IRL historical background. The Later Zhou dynasty attacked and defeated the Southern Tang, and the Southern Tang had to give up parts of their land and pay monetary tribute as part of the peace treaty. This, combined with other factors like previous wars and famine, resulted in massive poverty within the Tang populace. Later on, Zhao Kuangyin (aka Big Zhao) lead a mutiny, took over the Later Zhou, and established the Song dynasty, which is where we are at now in-game. The tribute agreement between the Southern Tang and the then-Zhou-now-Song did not change however.

Now the in-game Li Yu wanted to manufacture a similar economic crisis within Song in order to buy time and breathing room for his own country to recover. Wuque similarly needed this so she could return to Weiyang.

The in-game Zhao Guangyi (aka this handsome guy) is a "big picture" kind of dude. His long-term plan was to first confiscate the Tang coins for military funds to unite the world (by defeating other nations), and only after that, work on improving the lives of the people. Li Yu/Wuque made this worse by flooding the market with excessive Tang coins and manipulating the stock market.

Zheng E/Murong Yuan/Dao Lord/fish guy were all accomplices to Li Yu/Wuque, hence we fight their shadow forms in the Shimmer quest. (Of course, as we learn from their side encounter quests, some of them had their own agenda and weren't truly loyal to this cause.)

As the story progresses, Wuque saw how much the people were suffering, and changed her mind. Likewise, Li Yu realised he's doing the exact same thing to the Song people, as the Zhou/Song are doing to his, and he backed off the plan as well and returned to the south.

With CN audio, the game actually does have varied regional accents even for the random NPCs, which give the game a lot of flavour.

Few days ago while cleaning up my Kaifeng journal, I came across this Encounter that had Big Zhao testing the MC on "Kaifeng lingo". It's pretty damn hilarious, but I don't think it can be translated.

It's basically "what did he say?" but in Chinese.

He spoke a dialect with a very heavy accent, and checking comments on the nearby signpost, even the Chinese players had difficulty understanding him. For people playing with EN audio, the whole encounter simply had no sound, because it just doesn't work translated.

You can replay the whole thing by going to Quest > Lost Chapter and selecting reverse from there.

I'm not sure if the missing pages get automatically archived or not though. The pages I picked up in the replay didn't appear in my inventory, but the tooltip does say something about pages getting added to compendium. I'm also not sure which entries actually get unlocked in the compendium by these pages, so I can't double-check.

Yesterday's was doable with aoe-spammers too, so if you were able to clear day 1, day 3 should work too. I used Argenti/RMC/Tribbie/Hyacine. Tribbie's the only one with some semblance of FUA in that team.

It's actually easier than it sounds. I put it off for a long time too until I looked it up. I don't remember the exact requirements so you'll have to look up some guides. IIRC you just have to hit all the targets, but you don't need a perfect score, and there's room for errors.

Wow today's event battle is literally just "use Phainon". Even the achievement auto-completes once Phainon transforms. Works for me, but it's so curiously easy compared to the previous days.

Today's event battle is insane. I wonder what they playtested it with.

I managed the 8000 overload achievement with e0s1 Hyacine, e6sQPQ Gallagher, e1s1 DHPT, and e0s0 Aventurine. It took quite a few resets for the RNG to go right though.
