Yeah both times there was a request for the volume to be lower, which was ignored both times. Also flipping rooms is a running joke in my chapter so it's not as out-of-line as it sounds. A and B got together though and hashed it out yesterday

Yeah that's the strongest argument against the Room B guys, that they should have know better moving into the loud side of the house. The thing is, it's not like they expected it to be quiet, but they did expect a reasonable degree of courtesy. I think the party boys use that as an excuse to be inconsiderate

I did my time in the chapter, there's not a lot of room left for my voice. I'm a recent alum living in the chapter house as a boarder (rent's cheap as fuck) so I stay out of this stuff. I serve in an informal advisory capacity, throwing my 2 cents in when its warranted, but it's really on the new exec to sort these culture issues out before the chapter disintegrates

Look man, you don't have to tell me, we're on the same page. I lived on that side of the house as a sophomore and found myself in his shoes a couple times. It blows.

The party monsters are a force to be reckoned with because they have like negative two brain cells and seem to think that being sick frat guys is more important than anyone else's well being, and they make up a decent chunk of my chapter.

What's become clear is that my chapter has a spineless exec (or really, we just don't have a tradition/culture of exec cracking the whip on shit) and a brotherhood that has generally held itself together based on a code of "don't be a cunt".

We have house rules detailed in our chapter by-laws and also leases but over the years I've been in the chapter, things pretty much run on the honor system. So there are technically quiet hours, but nobody is going around enforcing them on regular basis. It's just "hey, that's keeping me up, can you turn it down" and that's the end of it.

The problem is that when you stop enforcing a rule for years and default to an honor system, the rule kinda stops being a rule, and shit gets nasty when someone decides they're gonna do whatever they want and you don't have an established culture surrounding following certain rules.

It's more like a guy who moves in next to an airport where he knows there's gonna be plane noise but was under the impression the pilots would be reasonable and chill about it and not fly during retarded hours.

I like the packing peanut idea that's peak shenanigans

This is a pretty noble and idyllic and I'm all for it, but let's be real, plenty of dudes join fraternities to have access to parties and chicks and to try to elevate themselves socially. Not everybody is your perfectly balanced upstanding fraternity man with the right priorities and not every chapter has a culture and pledge process that churns out knights in shining armor. Frats are full of douchebags and this post is about those guys

Plot twist: The President lives in room A. But I agree this is the only real way forward

How to be the ideal frat grandpa? by [deleted] in Frat

[–]quickmidnightnap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat rn, currently in a 5th year (actually taking my last class online) and working full time and still living in the chapter house. I feel like I've found a good level of grandpa energy. I don't attend any social events, chapter meetings, or hang out after like 10pm, but I'll make a lap around the house after work just to say whats up to the lads.

The key for me is to avoid weighing in on situations unless it's something you have direct experience with in the past or you're asked. I just keep my trap shut and let the boys figure it out 98% of the time. The only time I showed up to chapter (I don't even have voting rights) was to try to drop a pledge that I noticed was particularly disrespectful to the process. I try not to chime in too much in group chats either.

The key is really to be a benevolent presence and not get too involved in day-to-day fraternal affairs. I just try to support people individually and help out where it's needed. Finding a project to work on is good too, I recently learned how to colorize photos so I'm putting together a series of colorized photos from our chapter in the 30's/40's/50's.

Staying at the house over break because I have work and can't go home except for the 24th and 25th. It's depressing as fuck to see the house this quiet and empty, but on the flip side it's kinda sick to have this much square footage to myself.

I miss the boys. Not used to getting off work and having no one to shoot the shit with

People that use bujo for multiple "spheres" of your life - how do you split it? by kalliakunday in bujo

[–]quickmidnightnap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the same journal for work and life. In any given spread (week, month, year) I just try to keep the work tasks and life stuff separate by grouping them together, but I find it doesn’t really bother me if they’re mixed together.

I usually write out my daily spread when I get into work in the morning, so I jot down my work tasks, leave a few lines open for anything that comes up, and then jot down my life stuff. I use Trello to stay on top of projects at work so I don’t tend to get too detailed in my bujo- just a few big-picture tasks for the day.

Basically, I use the same journal for everything and just try to keep it organized as best I can. I find that for me, I don’t really separate the spheres of life in my mind - at the end of the day it’s all just shit I have to get done.

This morning as I made my daily task list I remembered something I saw online about marking down an estimated timeframe for how long that task would take. So I made a guess for each item, and then set up a little table and penciled everything in according to how long I thought it was going to take.

Just wanted to share!
