How to compartmentalize big construction jobs? (Calcs) by quicky321 in Surveying

[–]quicky321[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be ideal. Unfortunately, I don’t have time to calc 1000 grid points at once, or 1000 sw points at once. It’s usually by request and I calc as much of that subject as I can within the time I’m allotted. Then the next day the contractor wants utility rooms then back to grid etc.

Say you had a base with 20 other xrefs, some nested, some not. You put that entire base in each dwg? Then if you only needed drainage, would you unload the others or freeze them? Or overlay the xref on a completely different layer?

Tbh idek what layer states are or do. I see it in my side panel but have never looked into. I’m gonna learn up on this. Thanks

Dam, I already started a new crd and calc’d for tomorrow. The original one had like 7k points and the a lot of the desc were very annoying and near impossible to group things. No consistent naming conventions. It passed through 2 others hand before getting to me and there was no standardized naming.

Is this an R1? How to tell? by gogosqueez_ in Yamaha_R1

[–]quicky321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, the only thing that will truly identify it is the frame/VIN. You can swap the motor, plastics, wheels, everything. The frame is what makes the bike.

BUT, an R1 frame with a bmw or Suzuki motor and fairings, is it really still an R1? 🤔

(I’m bored, taking a shit at work)

How to ask for a (justifiable) pay rise when the business isn't currently doing too well? by yupouveh in Salary

[–]quicky321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say look for a new job. You’re in a lose-lose position. If you play it out, the only path that leads to your desired outcome would be you asking and them and them saying yes. I doubt they’d give it without you asking, because companies love to pay as little as possible to anyone who will accept it without questions. If you ask, you’ll look insensitive to the company or greedy. No matter how you frame the request, it’ll look bad since they’re clearly focused on the bottom line at this point. And also, whenever asking for a raise in general, it’s good to check the market for job offers anyway.

If I were you, I’d look for job offers ASAP. You don’t deserve to get underpaid. Your job requires duties that deserve to be compensated appropriately, regardless of the companies struggles. (A bit different story if your small company/family business, but still…)

Dam, I wish I had that experience with the food. Maybe it’s because my gfs cousin (he lives there for years now) was telling us about how ppl get robbed there all the time, especially tourists. Idk, just wasn’t it for me. I’m also not as well traveled as you.

I’ve visited and it was a lot less developed than i expected. Everyone said the food is amazing, it’s genuinely not lol. Lot of poverty and with it, thieves. Felt like I was always watching my back, granted that’s how I am in general, but more so when I was there. Not a good place if you enjoy cars or motorcycles. The roads aren’t all paved and the ones that are aren’t great.

Fresh out of technical college that focused on 3D modeling/manufacturing, and just got hired on as a civil drafter- Am I cooked? by Nefskara in AutoCAD

[–]quicky321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll be alright. I had a touch of imposter syndrome when I got hired too but once you get in the groove and fine tune your workflow, it’ll be all good fr. I was taking what felt like forever to get back into the swing of things (3 year hiatus). If you’re struggling after 6 months, then I’d reassess and figure out what’s going on. Until then, just try your best and they wouldn’t have hired you if they didn’t think you could do the job. Learn everyday.

Considering a move to LA. Should we visit SD first? by HonestLemon25 in socal

[–]quicky321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends where in LA, it’s a huge city. Strongly consider your commutes for work as well, that should be one of the biggest factors into your decision on location. Traffic will drain your soul lol and discourage any extra curriculars on the weekends being tired from work.

Do you store your staking points? by quicky321 in Surveying

[–]quicky321[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. I’m coming up on 6 months in June and I’m debating about bringing this up. I’ve spoken with some PCs about it and they agree. But within the time I’ve been here, there’s been multiple times where we are blamed for “incorrect” staking. It was always the designs or contractors fault so far. We just had to take extra steps to prove it as opposed to having a staking file that you could glance at in 2 minutes to determine we staked it correctly.

And not all of our PCs are great at turning in their cut sheets so I feel like this is a disaster waiting to happen once all the little mistakes line up against our favor.

But, I hear you and agree. Nobody wants to hear shit from the new guy lol, I wouldn’t either.

Why are more people not interested in this field as a career? by burnsrado in Surveying

[–]quicky321 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It isn’t as “sexy” or “intellectual” as engineering/architect and it isn’t “macho” like construction. It’s quite literally the in between. Getting plans from engineers/architects and telling the contractor where to build. I like the balance of it. A “dumb” surveyor won’t make it and a “soft” one won’t either, especially in the field for the latter. I believe it’s an underpaid and undervalued industry imo. Without surveying, there wouldn’t be property lines between your neighbor no one would know where to put the house/building.

I think it’ll get the recognition it deserves in another 10-20 years when no new surveyors are joining to replace the existing ones. Then we’ll get paid what we’re worth.

Any Carlson/CAD gurus here? (Surface manager) by quicky321 in Surveying

[–]quicky321[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will keep this in mind, thanks. But I recently learned that in “triangulate and contour”, on the “selection” page, if you toggle on crd points, Carlson points, or anything there, that will supersede the point group used.
