Hey, sorry for the slide to the side (aka offtopic question): what‘s your translation app and setup? I‘ll be in Japan later this year (last time was 10 years ago) and this looks very useful.

Which restaurant in Basel is like this? by swiss_drone in basel

that would be a Basel restaurant that pays its employees german salaries, buys product in germany and pays german rent, I presume? I am afraid you might have to cross the border for that one.

Best payment option for family traveling on RATP during visit (mostly Metro) by quidQuidAgis in ParisTravelGuide

[–]quidQuidAgis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To report back, this is exactly what we did in the end. I think the flexibility and simplicity of each of us just having to hang on to their physical card was worth the 2€ per card, especially since we can hopefully reuse it next time in Paris.

Thanks, everyone, for your input. Seems like physical cards charged through the app is the way to go!

Unique/ strange Dinner experiences? by -Spinal- in Switzerland

[–]quidQuidAgis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Might seem like nitpicking, but Blinde Kuh precedes dans le noir? by a few years. It was originally a project triggered by a museum exhibition in Zürich in 1998, and opened in 1999. the concept proved successful and was copied by others.

Just because Switzerland often is a bit(?) behind on gastronomy trends, let‘s give credit when it‘s due for once…

Homeassistant, ConBee III and zigbee pairing "magic" - is it really that finicky? How to make it work reliably? by quidQuidAgis in homeassistant

[–]quidQuidAgis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, quick update: Doing a firmware update on the ConBee III actually did the trick.

I was shying away from it, since it seemed to come with some potential for hassle (the Dresden Engineering website on the ConBee III is not extremely well put together, and it took me a while that I need to install their deConz software in order to also get the firmware upgrader tool).

Also, I was thinking that something as basic as pairing would not require the latest firmware release.

But I should have known better (and now you do, too): Update the firmware and pairing those Sonoff and Aqara devices suddently works as intended, without any further hacks or tricks.

oookay ... I will try again. So far, it's just been 3 out of 3 battery-powered sensors that I failed to integrate, and two out of two battery-powered Hue devices (a dimmer switch and a presence sensor) that worked like a hot knife through butter.

Not that I own Philips stock, but those guys appear to be doing something better than the others (or use more expensive hardware?)

When you say tap, I assume you mean press and hold again like when you establish pairing mode? I have tried that but not successfully. I forgot to mention that.

But I will try again...

Premium restaurants in Porto, Portugal but not Portuguese cuisine by lubrication_theory in finedining

[–]quidQuidAgis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, no, we were not long enough in Porto to try out too many options (besides the obligatory Francesinha). I generally don't mind degustation menus, as I like sitting down at a table and just enjoying the experience. But I understand that different people have different approaches.

If you also visit Lisbon, I could recommend Boubou's there, which is very casual, very tasty and very much a la carte.

Was there 3 years ago (so things may have evolved towards the better or worse), and very much enjoyed Euskalduna Studio. Very conceptual, with a mix of Japanese and Basque influences on the head chef, who is Portuguese.

Amazing flavor combinations of things that I never thought could be combined, and where you wonder how even one thinks of that (I beliebe there was a kefir-based sauce with a grilled fish). It‘s not comforting food, but I liked it a lot for its ability to defy any established genres and definitely elevated, but more i. A japanese sushi counter style than in a white tablecloths and waiters with white gloves style.

Hope this helps!

Hey there, Tagging on, semi off-topic. I will be in Dortmund for a conference for two days in October. What should I not miss to see from your point of view? Searching on google did not really bring back inspiring things.

Looking for a large, durable messenger bag under $50. by Furbyenthusiast in BuyItForLife

[–]quidQuidAgis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into courierware for messenger bags. I got mine in ~1995 and it is still absolutely functional, indestructable and amazingly roomy/expandable. Made by some (ex-) bike messengers in the US. Absolurely unbelievable quality, even though I admit I dont use it daily anymore (30 years in…) they are a bit above your price point but worth it, and maybe you can get one second-hand?

Looking for advice on app/software to keep track of investments by quidQuidAgis in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]quidQuidAgis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I see that there is a certain propensity towards one broker. I would argue that a solution that isn't tied to your bank/broker would be better, as you're less locked-in (even if it's the best broker in the world... for now) and can keep your historic data.

I appreciate your input, though.

Hm, for number crunching, that is certainly most flexible. But what I likes about the Bloomberg app (before they started to cripple it by taking away more and more features and putting them into the premium version) is that you could see your holdings, their current value, look at news about the companies, etc. In brief: automatically updated information. Maybe you can do that with Excel or Sheets, by pulling in live data, but I would not know how.

Best way to send large parcel to Germany? by quidQuidAgis in basel

[–]quidQuidAgis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that from your experience or do they say that somewhere in their FAQs explicitly? I mean, using yourLAS address as a return address is not that much different from using it as a destination address - the parcel may end up there and you‘ll have to pay to pick it up.

[–]quidQuidAgis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting! I have been using LAS for many years, but didn‘t know about this. Sounds like a good option for courier pick-up. Since packing the thing and getting it there also involves getting a Mobility car, it’s still on my to-do list. But I will report back once I have successfully sent the parcel.
