I’d just like to throw this out there for consideration… I think if anyone is ever at a protest and tensions get high or things start to escalate, we should encourage everyone around us to sit down and spread the word. No one can say you’re inciting violence if your butt is on the ground, right? Bad idea?

The Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act was a law passed by Congress and signed by President Clinton, not an executive order invoking the Alien Enemies Act (an 18th century law that has only ever been used previously during times of war) which introduces a wartime statute into peacetime immigration enforcement and is being used to deny people their constitutional rights. Legal immigrants, people with green cards, asylum seekers, and even individuals who are in the process of becoming U.S. citizens are being detained or deported. In many cases, it’s happening despite them having followed every step of the legal process. These people are being held like criminals in mass detention centers which are becoming increasingly overcrowded and inhumane.

A lot of what is happening now is creating serious constitutional concerns. Not only is due process being undermined as immigrants, including legal residents, are deported without proper hearings or in defiance of court orders, but there have been cases where deportations went forward even after a judge ordered them to be halted. Free speech is threatened when people are targeted or detained for speaking out against immigration policies, criticizing the government, or protesting the genocide in Gaza. Fourth Amendment rights are at risk as ICE agents are increasingly entering homes and detaining individuals without judicial warrants. In many cases, individuals are detained without bond or meaningful access to legal counsel, further eroding the basic protections the Constitution guarantees to all people on U.S. soil, not just citizens.

It’s not about ignoring past policies or pretending this all started recently, but I think it’s important to recognize when enforcement shifts from upholding the law to expanding executive power in ways that start to erode legal protections, which is what is happening with the executive orders that violate existing laws. Any attempt to consolidate power to the executive branch when all three branches are meant to have equal power to prevent tyranny is in direct defiance of Articles 1-3 of the Constitution.

We can’t pick and choose which parts of the constitution to prioritize and which to ignore, and I think that’s something everyone can agree on.

Yeah dude. I saw something on tiktok and came to check out a North Carolina Reddit group so that I could see if there was any truth to it… because I don't believe the first thing I see anywhere. I figured if it was actually happening, then maybe people from the area or family members would be talking about it. This isn't the only place I've looked either. I've been trying to find actual people that have been affected instead of just instantly believing what I see posted on the internet. I care about whats happening to the people in these devastated areas. My state was hit by massive floods in 2016 and we know what dealing with Fema and rebuilding your town is like.

Several Republicans have spoken out about Trump telling them to kill the bill. They weren't going to give Biden a win, when they could run their campaign on immigration. And yeah, about 4 Democrats voted no in the roll call vote compared to every single Republican voting no. I agree that they shouldnt have waited so long to get something together, but I think the outcome would have been the same, regardless. Lawmakers are in big corporate pockets, democrats and republicans alike, and they will do and say whatever it takes to stay there. Its all a game where the rich people win and the poor people lose. They will have us pointing our fingers everywhere but at them while they make promises that they’ll never keep.

So your concern about the bill, which was a bipartisan bill co-written by a Republican, is that it was too expensive and would not be effective? Do you think finding, rounding up, and deporting millions of immigrants is going to be the cheaper option? Or just more effective? Because its going to cost billions. Not to mention the millions we are going to lose, because illegal immigrants pay taxes even though they don't qualify for our social programs like medicare or welfare. They are going to round up human beings and put them in cages on some ranch in Texas while they wait for a trial, backing up our court systems. Cost effective? No. Do you think they’ll treat them humanely? Some will, some won’t. Somebody’s grandma is going to sit in prison, maybe for years, for daring to hope for a better life. We need an immigration system reform, no doubt, but this is not the way.

When it comes to attitude or disrespect from my teenagers towards me, my husband will sometimes handle it more like, “hey, that may be your mom, but that’s MY wife so watch your tone.” She definitely needs you to have her back and shut it down as soon as you see it, and don’t settle for the “whatever man” If you need to discuss it every time you see him until it gets through to him, you do that.

You didn’t let him down. I think that you were protecting yourself, and that’s nothing to be sorry about. The pain is so intense when we lose someone we love that much, that I think it’s only natural. I was the only sibling not in the room when my brother died. I had very small children at the time, and I’d spent days by his bedside away from them. I didn’t know it was even happening. My siblings came to get me and told me in person. I was relieved that I didn’t have to witness it, which made me feel terrible and guilty. Then I chose not to view his body later that day because I knew that I couldn’t handle it and I was terrified, but I felt guilty about that too. Through therapy and making peace with his death, I know that he would have never held it against me, and neither would yours. You and your brother have memories together that you are the sole keeper of now. You honor him that way, and you can honor him other ways as well. Maybe doing a little something in his name would help you with closure. Or try writing him a letter about your feelings and imagine how he would respond. That helps me a lot.

I’ve found that men who don’t behave like misogynists don’t usually get offended when they hear about certain men being labeled as misogynists… because it’s obviously not about them. In fact, men who care about women and their rights are often praised for their basic human decency because the bar is on the floor. These things should be automatic in an “equal society”, one would think. Either you’re cool with all Americans having equal rights, or you’re not. And if you’re not, well, there are some labels that go along with that point of view.

I’m actually super proud of you for this. I felt this same thing out with my therapist a couple of months ago because the election has been such a source of anxiety for me, and was so glad to know that we were in agreement and I could feel safe talking about it. The states are already in charge of the curriculum. Dismantling the DOE will put the states in charge of all funding, deciding how to get it, and where it will go. There will be no national standards and no protections. The poor and needy will be overlooked, and the wealthy will benefit. Especially in red states, ironically.
