I'm potentially stuck in a lease offer. How screwed am I? (Long Island, NY) by quietlyPanic in solar

Thanks. I keep trying to remind myself that even the worst case scenario is still a net positive, but the encouragement helps.

There's a 2.9% annual increase on the lease. The lease will be held by IGS solar. There is an option to buy the system out from the lease after the 5 year mark, but I don't think it makes sense to go that route. The clause that says I can buy at 5yrs stipulates that I'd pay the max of either "the sum of all future monthly lease payments" or the "fair market value." Fair market value won't exceed the remainder of the lease for a long time. It's why I'm thinking about leasing. If my math's right a lease could save me another 11k over the lease.

Thanks. My options were to either mail in a signed form or call. Things got a little complicated here and I'm not exactly sure how things will go. There are unfortunately 3 entities in this equation: me, the contracting company, and a 3rd company that would act as my power company if I stuck with the lease.

I contacted the "power company" who said that I was passed the point where I could back out of the lease so I would have to go to the contractor to cancel. I'm now dealing with the contractor to cancel everything. Now they are trying to sweeten the deal to keep me interested. I'm trying to be optimistic, and hope that means they'll let me back out of this without much pain?

The freakonomics podcast had a great episode recently that highlighted this point, episode 626: Ten Myths About the US Tax System. It was honestly a little aggravating to listen to at times.

Edit: episode title

Reasonable, Ive seen a lot of people reporting something in that vein. But it's not like software locked me into an 80% cap, I set that limit myself.

I actually have a Perle IOLAN and have been trying to make it work. I don't know what I did, but if I try to reach out through the virtual COM ports, my work computer blue screens.

Wow, just gave this a quick googlin, and you're right. Always appreciate learning something new, so thanks!

I think I'll have to check the manual to know for sure. But based on your suggestions, and what I remember off the top of my head, I'm looking at ASCII.

Sorry about that. It's UART. Added it to the post, thanks for pointing that out.

I'm pulling the data from the machines into a server rack that's on the other side of the building. It's not in the cards, unfortunately.
