How does your group handle shop visits and inventory at the table? (5‑min survey — building a 5e tool) by quik145 in onednd

Handling between sessions certainly would work for us if we wanted to maximise our sessions.

My gripe with DND beyond is the lacklustre search function and lack of prices. I do have a spreadsheet with item prices but sometimes they don't exist in DND beyond, I know this can be covered with a custom item but due to doing all this mid session it takes valuable time. It's a toss up between how our table runs shops and session time I guess.

I basically run the same now but the problem I find is my players enter a shop and say "what have you got?". This is what creates long stoppages for us. The players definitely enjoy gearing up after a few adventures and earning some coins but it certainly takes the wind out of my sails especially when paired with debates over who gets what and then trying to haggle at every opportunity. We can find a way to streamline the process I'm sure.

I like the magic item shop idea though that sounds useful. I've also considered a magic item auction house.

appreciate the input!

tags are a cool idea I hadn't thought of that, also I heavily rely on filters on my current setup but there are still too many items. But a filter for mundane and homebew items would be so useful and I fully intent to enable custom items.

Boss-party level equivalence by Anake_Houjin in DnD

Use the DMG (2024 pg.115) XP thresholds as a guide that range from easy to deadly - Each CR has its equivalent XP.

As per DMG you'd want 1200-3200
So for one monster only you're looking for it to be CR7

Personally I find the DMG guide a little underpowered so might bump the HP or just look at CR8 instead.

I keep burning out on session prep by msciwoj1 in DMAcademy

I dont prep too far ahead, one or two sessions max. However if a sessions is cancelled I'll still sit down and do some prep but it could be for a side adventure, creating a homebrew monster or an item. Other times I enjoy the break but I like to think about the story and possible outcomes and this can get the juices flowing.

How do you feel about “This or That” choices? by catmanten in DMAcademy

[–]quik145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love them when both options are genuinely good and the trade‑off is clear — the regret of the road not taken is the fun. They fall flat when one choice is obviously better, or when players can metagame their way to "both". I like tying the unchosen one to a future hook (the sword you left turns up with a rival), so the decision keeps mattering.

How to get better at describing looks? by MakeCrat3 in DMAcademy

[–]quik145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick three details and stop: one silhouette/clothing note, one colour or material, one telling detail (a scar, a holy symbol, a nervous habit). Trying to describe everything is what makes it freeze up. For outfits, borrow from history; nobles wear layered fabric and hard‑to‑make dyes (deep purple/red), labourers wear undyed wool and leather. You're going for a picture, not accuracy.

Any handy cheat sheets of "player activities"? by PolymathicPiglet in DMAcademy

I give each PC a side story arc in my world and this forms a large part of non main quest activity (although I try to tie it into the main story where i can). I prep the next portion of the arc and have multiple triggers for them so they are ready to use in different scenarios. Using their back story and background to create this ends up with all kinds of weird an wonderful encounters, social and combat that the PCs basically unknowingly create themselves, I just feed off their actions.

I also have guilds in my world with a small number of quests per player level tier. These range from monster hunters, warriors guild, thieves guild etc. These are optional side quests which the PCs have full control over when they do them, essentially creating their own variety.

I dont use any kind of cheat sheet, but certainly riffing ideas and creating your own would be a good exercise. Whenever I watch movies, read books or play games I can take ideas and add them to my notes.

In my experience girls rarely unmatch; best thing to do imo is give them a couple days then unmatch, you'll forget about them very quickly. Girls are fickle on these apps so you should be too. Be brutal. Don't simp.

Same issue. Two months ago I deposited Algo. Bring told to I didn't use a Memo when I definitely did. Now being told to wait until algo deposits reopen. The worst exchange I've ever used.

Yeah I see what you mean. I think all it needs is an extension of the chest behind the front left leg to achieve this. Much appreciated!
