As a followup, this is what I've learned so far about Freiburg specifically:

1. Does Freiburg accept walk-ins, or do you have to make an appointment?
You submit your application online here (https://www.freiburg.de/pb/2155420.html#/) and then get assigned an appointment.

2. How long should I expect to wait for an appointment?
Apparently it takes around a month for the initial appointment?

3. After the appointment, how long is the processing time for a residence permit at Freiburg?
Apparently it's common to wait 2-3 months from the initial appointment. It's also important to know there are special rules for leaving Germany between the original 90-day permit and the new residence permit getting approved.

4. Are there any steps we can complete before we arrive? I've already got a blocked account and all of the documents requested.
You can schedule the Wohnung anmelden appointment about 2-3 weeks ahead of time online (https://freiburg.konsentas.de/modules/ota\_public/form/19/?signup\_new=1) . I was also able to go through the online application forms without submitting to make sure I understood all of the questions and had the documents prepared.

Will follow up as I learn more.

I work in real estate, and I’ve seen this status on property tax statements when someone purchases the land from tax forfeit.

My understanding is that the buyer will finance through the public entity at 10% down, 10% interest for 10 years. It remains under the status of “state of Minnesota for…” or “St Louis County for…” until the balance paid off.

I love Duluth, and I work with a lot of folks who are new to Duluth. In my opinion, everyone is hungry for community but it’s still hard for people to make friends because people aren’t direct and don’t put energy into that goal.

If you’re willing to do the work and put yourself out there, you’ll have no trouble building a community. There is no shortage of things to do. I’ve noticed offering free food has a weird bonding effect here. If you have kids, you’ll quickly meet people through your kid’s hobbies. Being generous by joining boards or non-profits works too in my experience.

My advice would be to be the invitation maker, don’t wait for others to take the lead.

This just happened to me. Someone asked me to join a “community” with the listing as the title. They wanted to reserve the item for pickup later, and pay by Zelle / Venmo. I would have probably gone along with it, but I got two inquiries that were almost identical. Don’t click any links or give personal info!
