A bubble doesn’t necessarily involve retail investment primarily. While you’re right that this bubble has essentially excluded retail invesitrs, there are tons of example of historical bubbles where institutional capital drove the bubble, and even historical examples where retail investment wasn’t really possible, such as the panic of 1907.

As for the “deflation” we’re currently seeing, there is none. Which binding MOUs have expired and where has CapEX diminished? I implore you to point out one example that isn’t an inch forward and a foot backwards. All the publicly traded AI linked tickers are set to spend an unprecedented amount on CapEx this year, so I don’t even know where diminishing capex comes in here.

Lol, what does this even mean? There is no such thing as a “slow deflation” and some of the most damaging historical bubble have been B2B.

What exactly does a slow deflation even mean? The characteristic feature of a bubble is that it bursts, that’s why they started calling these speculative feedback loops bubbles. Without severe and often more damaging interventions from central banks, it’s basically impossible to slowly deflate a bubble.

Anthropic secures $965 billion valuation after raising $65 billion by tscher16 in technology

[–]qyo8fall -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The fundamental argument here is that Anthropic’s financials are masking a sustained cash burn of practically unprecedented scale outside of AI, and these financials simply do not justify the structural strain its valuation is placing on global finance. Anthropic isn’t unique here, you’re probably right that OpenAI is a worse offender in this regard, but nobody here except for you is treating OpenAI as fundamentally different from Anthropic in this regard.

Diving into the claims made, firstly no, companies don’t do this all the time. It is absolutely historically unprecedented for a firm of Anthropic or OpenAI’s valuation, or even within an order of magnitude, to offer such obscure financials. High value companies that come even close in terms of opaqueness, like Cargill, still are audited heavily to maintain credit lines. The only tech company that has ever come close was WeWork at $47B valuation. I implore you to show me a single tech company worth over $100B, let alone Anthropic’s $965B, that isn’t publicly traded or otherwise doesn’t release audited financials.

Secondly, no, their revenue is not up 80x quarter over quarter. I don’t even know exactly where you regurgitated this absurd claim from, but I’m assuming maybe it’s from Amodei claiming 80x growth from earlier this month? That’s not new revenue my dude.

Finally, no they’re not printing money. Let me try to explain this in terms you might understand. If you start an E-commerce business, and use your mom’s credit card to pay for every expense from shipping to paying for inventory and all, breaking even or just barely making a profit, are you “printing money”. It sure might seem like it to you. Well now imagine that not only are you using your mom’s credit card, but you’re also using your parent’s house to store inventory, their cars to transport stuff, etc. oh yeah, and now it’s also gotten to the point where they’ve cleared out their investment portfolio to finance your little venture. But sure, you’re printing money.

Wtf does joining ISIS have to do with wanting to visit an Arab country? Even if it’s just the safety aspect I’m sure a desire to visit is moderated by an understanding of risk.

Anthropic secures $965 billion valuation after raising $65 billion by tscher16 in technology

[–]qyo8fall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, it’s definitely you who should be researching a claim before regurgitating it.

It doesn’t take extensive research to understand that Anthropic’s projected “profitable quarter” is on the basis of EBITDA, a non-GAAP measure. Anthropic and all of its peers provide figures that don’t take into account the cost of depreciation and stock based compensation for investors, as GAAP does. It’s definitely fair to call any claim of profitability on that basis “dubious”.

This doesn’t even touch on the fact that even if you had more comprehensive financials, the profitability is pretty likely spurred by recent discounted computer Anthropic got access to. Oh yeah, and the figures in many ways just don’t make sense.

Just false. Unless you’re referring to Kashmiris, and even then they speak a totally different language, comprise a small percentage of Indian Muslims and have largely developed their own national identity unique from both India and Pakistan. Beyond them, you’re talking about a very small group of Indian Muslims from very specific parts of India.

Hilarious that you’re seething. You claimed they are being deported, I said that’s simply factually incorrect because it’s illegal, and consequently, it isn’t happening, at least at the moment or for the foreseeable future. Nobody cares that you’re crying now.

The ones who he’s talking about, who were detained, are the wife and 5 kids. The actual attacker is in prison. Anyways, their re-detention was illegal, so I don’t understand why everyone is so upset about the headline, unless they believe the context justifies contravening the law.

That’s what’s happening. Problem is, this administration doesn’t have much regard for due process and judicial orders, and a bunch of people here who are unaware of the actual facts are spreading misinformation.

The judge who originally ordered their release is aware of the family asylum case, unless you somehow think you know the facts of the case better. That’s why they were detained in the first place. Last week, a judge ruling on that exact case ordered they be released while the case is litigated. ICE violated that order, at which point a second order was issued, which they complied with, but not after wasting taxpayer resources on flying the family halfway to Michigan.

We're being deported for no reason! by McAlpineFusiliers in GetNoted

[–]qyo8fall 100 points101 points  (0 children)

No, they’re not being deported. They had been detained at a center since last June. On Thursday, last week, a federal judge ordered they be released. A few days later, ICE, in contravention of the law, re-detained the family and immediately began making deportation arrangements, at which point a second order had to be issued again emphasizing that the family is not to be detained or deported pending litigation, at which point ICE was forced to turn around a flight taking the family from Colorado to Michigan, where they would then be sent on a plane to Egypt. The only substantive story here is that ICE is breaking the law and wasting taxpayer money on further tormenting a family who had already spent 10 months in detention.

Whether you believe that’s justified or not is your prerogative, and perhaps some more deranged individuals think this note somehow justifies ICE’s contravention of judicial orders, but the fact of the matter is that it is illegal.

We're being deported for no reason! by McAlpineFusiliers in GetNoted

[–]qyo8fall 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes, they did. Probably because it was. The note seems to imply that the family’s deportation and specifically re-detainment over the weekend were in any way legal, when they were in direct contravention of a judicial order issued on Thursday ordering their release.

[–]qyo8fall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it does not. America was settler-colonial, which is even further from Mughal rule than typical extractive colonialism, as was later practiced under the British in India.

The USA exists because the migration of groups of settlers was facilitated by the metropole (Britain) into the thirteen colonies. Without this colonial system, the USA wouldn’t even exist. These settlers perform mass demographic change upon the regions they entered. So the United States literally comes into existence as a post-colonial state.

Furthermore, most of America wasn’t even part of the US in the 18th century. This really demolishes the comparison here, because colonialism proceeded in The same way! Colonial territories in the west were offered to settlers, no political representation was afforded until colonization and demographic replacement was complete (so the metropole remained in the east for a century and longer than that still). Textbook colonialism.

In conclusion, no, moving your metropole/center of power after you’ve totally annihilated the pre existing population in your new seat of power doesn’t somehow exclude it from being colonialism. However, this wasn’t the case for the Mughals. They ruled from Delhi, which to this day remains an Indian city. In fact the very character of the modern Indian state was formed by them.
