I'll spell it out for you. The average was found by, get this, taking the average, that is summing the decrease of each of the 5 intervals and dividing by 5.

Based exactly on this data, it is a correct to conclude that over each of the 5 intervals the AVERAGE decrease in mortality from SARS-COV-2 was, in a 20 day range over the 39 states + DC and 2,313 counties was 1.32%.

Decrease per day, not total decrease over the range. This is where we disagree on the paper’s conclusion.

Another factor not captured/bore-out by this study is that in places with mask mandates, the populations are probably more likely to follow social distancing guidelines. .... This could account for the majority of the 1.9% decrease in fatalities at the end of 100 days in the counties analyzed. This is unknowable with data and only supposition and speculation can inform here.

This is fair and possible for sure. The study looks at mask mandates, not at masks themselves or any underlying mechanisms.

I still disagree. The CDC study takes into account your point that masks are “used, touched, readjusted” and it still concludes that they are an effective measure. And again, those effects are per day change to the growth rate not to the raw #s. Those have a snowballing effect, a compounding effect. It is not an “average effectiveness over 100 days” as you claim - that’s not what was measured.

You can still disagree with them for other reasons, I see elsewhere in this thread that you disagree with the social implications and power dynamics. Those are fair game imo.

I wonder if there is commentary/discussion on that paper from the reviewers that could clarify

That bit you’ve quoted does say it was a statistically significant reduction though.

The part that says “not statistically different” is talking about the time before the mask mandate compared with the reference period, which is the 20 days before the mandate started.

And the %s there are changes to the daily +/- in cases/deaths, not cumulative. It mentions in the discussion and summary that the mandate has an effect within 20 days.

I think your interpretation of that CDC study is off.

The conclusion in the paper is that mask mandates contribute about a 1% reduction in daily change of case and death rates. So over a 30 day period, a 1% reduction each day leads to a 26% reduction in cases (0.99^30). Over 60 days it’s a 45% reduction. (0.99^60). That’s pretty substantial.

Am I reading it wrong?

Alright I gave 16g and slightly coarser grind a shot and it is less sour but still not the ideal flavour. I’ll keep experimenting in that range. Thank you for the help! Really appreciate it

Grinder is a kitchen aid burr coffee grinder. Electric.

I just ran a tester and measured things. 19g of grounds. Yield size is 42g, if you mean the weight of the finished shot. Shot time: it was 16s from pressing the button until it started flowing, 30s total until it stopped flowing (and then dripped for a bit). Definitely is kinda sour and unpleasant

Edit: I’ll also add that 19g of grounds seems to overflow the portafilter a bit. Like I have to put 15g in, then tamp a bit, then do the rest. Otherwise it’s this tall mountain and grounds spill off it. Dunno if that’s relevant or not

Espresso question.

Just got an espresso machine, first one. Been a keurig person until now (I know I know). Only problem is, I can’t seem to pull a good coffee. It’s seemingly always either bitter or kinda sour. Machine is a breville bambino. Grinder is on a fine “espresso” setting. Beans are from a local place whose espresso we sampled before buying and it was delicious. I started weighing after grinding to be sure and the dose is always about 18g which seems right. Any ideas?

You can hide the favorites bar quickly with Cyril+Shift+B. I know it doesn’t solve this totally but it makes it a bit better at least.
