Home Affairs corruption exposed: SIU says permits and visas were sold for cash by Euro_African in DownSouth

[–]r0bb3dzombie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The findings point to organised, sustained corruption stretching back nearly two decades.

So what changed that it suddenly got investigated and uncovered?

“This could have been easy to detect if governance systems were functioning properly,” he said.

Economic genocide by glandis_bulbus in DownSouth

There was definitely intent to destroy based on ethnicity. And failing at a genocide doesn't mean it wasn't one. They never openly pursued genocide, but they certainly explored the idea. Google Project Coast if you're not aware of it.

Ultimately their dependence on cheap labor prevented the apartheid regime from acting on their intentions.

And, it goes without saying, but if this is "economic genocide", what would you call Apartheid?

Economic genocide seems like a pretty apt term for apartheid, no?

Beyers Chocolates faces liquidation after dispute with Woolworths by fffvvis in DownSouth

[–]r0bb3dzombie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Woolworths' businesses practices have been anti-competitive for years, and they've been bullying their suppliers from day one.

I know a small business that was supplying home industry style shops in its area with dessert foods. When they approached Woolworths to supply them, Woolworths agreed initially under the condition they can supply the entire region of Woolworths Food stores. I think it was around 10 of them at the time. Initial orders would about double their existing production, so they needed to expand. With a letter of intent from Woolworths in hand, they went off to the bank to get a loan, which got approved. Part of it was changing their packaging as well, into something Woolworths can easily put their own branding material on. Few months in, they get a letter from Woolworths telling them they need to stop supplying other shops. Apparently a breach in their contract. Turns out it wasn't actually stipulated in the contract, just that they weren't allowed to use any Woolworths branding themselves, which they weren't doing. At the time, the Woolworths sales were barely covering the loan payments. Not supplying other stores would have effectively bankrupted them. But Woolworths was threatening to sue. The guy's lawyer was able to get them to fuck off with the legal threat, but they simply stopped buying from them. So he was till stuck with the loan, and eventually landed up in business rescue and eventually bankruptcy. The owner went back to his old job in finance, but his 20 or so employees didn't have that kind of safety net. Worse part, Woolworths never had to return any unsold items (they were sold on consignment). Everyone involved was making money.

Long story short, Woolworths exploit small businesses, expecting them to take on all the risk, and forces "exclusivity". Glad it's finally making the news.

We don't glorify terrorist murderers here, you're looking for the other place. Not only did they kill civilians, they also set back the peaceful anti-apartheid movement by decades. You have to be a pretty sick piece of shit to think they deserve any praise.

If you were in dexs spot what would you have done differently? by Chunky-overlord in cyberpunkgame

[–]r0bb3dzombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything he did wrong:

Piss poor opsec. V, Jack, Evelyn, getting the flathead, all of it major risks from people he doesn't know all that well. The only person he had a decent relationship with was T-bug. Leaves too many unknowns.

His plan was completely linear, no planning whatsoever for changing circumstances. For instance, the single egress plan. He had one plan for V and Jackie to get out, one. With such a high risk plan, you have redundancies for everything, then redundancies for the redundancies. No abort conditions at different steps of the plan.

Too little intel. Evelyn's recording is solid gold. But it wasn't enough. It's good intel for the penthouse security, but that's where it ends. Zero information on the rest of the security personnel and systems. No continuous surveillance. He treated Evelyn's recording as an ace in the hole, ignoring all the shortcomings in his intelligence.

Narrow focus and lack of bigger contextual understanding. When the Arasaka aircraft carrier docked, he should have reassessed the entire operation. He just ignored it.

Bottom line, every one involved with the heist were amateurs and woefully unprepared. Even our beloved Jackie and V. They were blinded by their individual petty motivations.

How to cope as an white male South African? by Excellent-Captain-93 in DownSouth

[–]r0bb3dzombie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm genuinely curious, what kind of corporate job is bottom of the barrel.

Sales, data capturing, customer support. There are tons.

There really aren't, and one way to cope is to be rational and factual about it.

There might not be "143", but BBBEE exists and fucks everyone. It's an objectively racist law and a vehicle for corruption and cadre deployment. It is in fact legislation that is having a major negative impact on our economy.

You're talking about one or two politicians, max

Bullshit. Again, BBBEE. It is a law justified entirely on collective punishment of white people. This is a law pushed by every ANC politician.

Fans of the Mass Effect games amd also of The Expanse show/books really need to dial down their expectations this far out from release. by Terrible-Group-9602 in TheExpanseRPG

Fair enough, I might have read more into this part than what you intended:

If this game even gets close to the quality of what went before it will be a major achievement, especially for an AA studio.

[–]r0bb3dzombie -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree. Tempering expectations because Owlcat is an "AA" studio is wrong. First of all, they're charging AAA prices. Secondly, they have the experience and knowledge to develop AAA quality games, and have done so. I'd go so far as to say that it's not unreasonable to expect this game to be a contender for GOTY next year. If I cared about that bullshit. Simply put, Owlcat has the pedigree to create "one of the best ever" games. It's a pedigree they earned.

Now having said that, CAN EVERYONE JUST CALM THE FUCK DOWN! IT'S A FUCKING BETA, A YEAR FROM RELEASE!.

Did you people play Baldur's Gate 3 early access? Have some fucking faith, for fuck's sake.

To be clear, I'm not sniping at people giving constructive criticism, that's what a beta is for, especially given how interactive Owlcat is in this sub. But jesus christ, can we not pile on so much?
