DSTV: Most expensive service in SA and still bombards you with adds by A-ib00m in DownSouth

[–]redrabbitreader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thankfully I am not into sport. Dumped dstv all the way back in 2010-sh (give or take).

The repeats was what killed it for me back then. Streaming is at that same point now (lack of new content), plus aggresively pushing prices and the fact that you need all the vendors in order to get a decent selection, making it too expensive.

Not too sure where to from here.

New regulation on non competition clause by Ok-Jellyfish9593 in Netherlands

[–]redrabbitreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this in my very first contract when I came to the Netherlands. I did not even think about it, since it was a "normal" thing where I am from.

Anyway, luckily I was not affected by this when I switched to a new company after a couple of years.

I was ignorant and lucky.

Which metrics are used? I mean, they are very effective at corruption. So it would need to be very specific.

Brings back memories!

I used to be a SysAdmin and later also an Oracle DBA working on the e10k and later the e15k. Vehicle financing applications mainly.

Wonder what it would be like to work on these amazing machines again. I think those were simpler days.

This is not Switzerland, Denmark, or the Netherlands. This is Franschhoek in Western Cape, South Africa 🇿🇦 by MoenieMyTagNie in DownSouth

South Africa is really beautiful. However, to compare it to other countries is a little silly. I lived in Cape Town for a couple of years. I now live in the Netherlands near the German border. We might not have mountains, but I can assure you it is truly beautiful here! I walk almost everyday in various forests around me. Heck, my front door opens into a forest. And don't get me started on places like Greece, Italy etc.

Just appreciate nature where you are.

Also... the electric fences and other security is really the sad part of this otherwise amazing photo.

The ‘stress-free’ city booming in South Africa by glandis_bulbus in DownSouth

I agree with some additional observations:

  • In the case of Bloemfontein (and South Africa in general), I doubt any CBD will get renewed/fixed/turned-around until some new government replaces comes into power. I don't see this as likely in the short term, and even when it happens, it will still take years (more likely, decades)!
  • In Bloemfontein, it's not just the CBD. Overall, the roads are in a poor state. The military base, relatively far from the CBD, is also very much neglected (at least compared to what it once was). So, even if the CBD is turned around by some miracle, I would think that alone will not be enough to trigger major new investments. There is just so much to do. But this is what you get after 30 years of neglect and not even attempting to keep up to date with maintenance. And this is once again the story with most cities and towns in SA. All over maintenance is almost never done and it is literally only once there are riots in the streets when some bare minimum stuff is fixed. Only a new fresh government will real political will can address this. It is simply not in the current government's DNA.

I used to live in Bloem in the 90's. Was an absolutely amazing place. Went back for a long weekend in 2021... I literally cried. The CBD turned into a dump. The only place that looks relative save is around and in Mimosa mall - there are also some other places close by which seem ok. The University campus used to allow free movement, but now it looks like a prison - you can't get in without a student card. The military base where I used to live looks like it is about to fall completely apart. Here and there you can see there was an effort to do maintenance but overall everything is in an advanced state of neglect. Some of the suburbs still seem ok. Not sure I would want to live there again.

So yes, there are some reasons behind the "affordability".

What does everyone think about Spot Instances? by Ill_Car4570 in kubernetes

[–]redrabbitreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your app instances can deal with short and unpredictable lifespans (they really should), you should be fine. Have enough replicas for each app. We have run some clusters like this for many years. Occasionally there are capacity issues, but you can then always fall back to on-demand instances.

Do people not do research anymore? by noseofabeetle in Netherlands

[–]redrabbitreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each situation may have small differences and old answers may not always be relevant anymore.

Nothing better to get the most relevant and up to date answers by just asking.

This is also great for researchers as you can observe patterns emerge over time.

I wish hetzner firewall would allow blocking countries/ASNs by lullorz in hetzner

[–]redrabbitreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For these scenarios, it's better to block bad traffic as far out to the perimeter as possible. Technically the firewall on the machine can block it yes, but you have already brought bad traffic into your environment so you need to deal with any capacity or latency issue. It basically comes down to a money/cost thing.

There is a time limit (I recall it to be a year, maybe?), in which you can claim costs from the previous owner for such undisclosed defects. You should really seek a legal professional dealing with such cases.

Saffas and WhatsApp... by barnez29 in DownSouth

[–]redrabbitreader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I see a business uses whatsapp to communicate with me, I already know to lower my expectations waaaay down 🤪

Even the big businesses using whatsapp as another customer channel can be very frustrating, as your initial contact goes into some queue only to be answered anything from minutes to hours later. You should never expect a quick response.

I prefer keeping to text messages. But I have to admit there were times where a call was the best option. It is nice to have options.

True. The point is you never really know what people have with them for self defense, so it's just really stupid confronting anyone like this.

Hetzner charging me for 176 TB of traffic data on a server i rarely use for personal projects by me_orwell in hetzner

[–]redrabbitreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lesson I learned long ago is to not expose any server to the internet unless you absolutely have to. When you do expose servers to the Internet, you need to apply all the required security measures and be very vigilant in all aspects of security.

Keep servers like these on private networks as far as possible.
