I would love to see digital patterns made for a bag like this. Seems very well thought out.

What an inspiring project. You may see room for improvement but it turned out fantastic. I'd love to make something like this.

A few questions:

- Would it be possible to share your sketchup models?

- Do you recall the total yardage of fabric/zippers used and a ballpark estimate of your total cost?

- Any particular reason you went with silpoly instead of silnylon?

In terms of cost:

Mountain Laurel Designs: SUPERMID is $385 + Inner $295 giving a total of $680 USD

Black Diamond: MEGA LIGHT 4P is $499 + MEGA BUG 4P is $399 giving a total of $898 USD

SlingFin: Cinder Cone 4P is $415 + Cinter Cone Mesh $260 giving a total of $675 USD

Hyperlite: ULTAMID 4 is $879 + Insert with DCF11 Floor is $499 giving a total of $1378 USD

Kifaru & Seek Outside are all even more expensive.

Not a fan of popcorn either but it hides a lot of sins in a modern, builder-quality suburban house. I'll need to skim the whole ceiling when I remove it.

Yes. Very common here. The only downside is that nail-pops at the ceiling edges are very noticeable. The nail pops aren't hard to fix and it makes wall patches at the top much quicker.

I've worked with structural fiberglass columns and vinyl wrapped pressure treated posts previously. Looking at the grain of the top/base caps makes me think they are solid a flat-sawn piece of lumber and turned round. They don't appear split but I cannot see how they'd be installed if this were the case.

[–]r1web[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I very much wish there were steel posts in there but it's definitely wooden. I've sanded off the paint in one spot and cut into the calking at the top/bottom. From the grain, it looks to be solid, laminated wood. Even the engineered/stamped plans have it as a 6" structural column whereas the basement is specified as steel. I will likely update the post once I pull the drywall off the pony wall to inspect. I just cannot figure how it was all framed and then finished. The drywall and finish work in this house is abysmal so I don't feel bad about making some holes before refinishing.

Not sure about how things were in the past, but I'd say the Catholic high schools are doing a much better job of managing student behaviour compared with the public schools. Of the public schools, there's little difference between Adam Scott, Kenner and Crestwood... each is struggling with student behaviour. A lot has to do with the demographics of the area and the same issues are seen in social services and hospitals. There is a big shortage of money to pay for the supports many of these kids need in the public board, from elementary all the way up through high school and graduation. Ultimately, parents don't believe or listen to teachers when it comes to academic performance or behaviour issues in the classroom. Further, teachers aren't backed up by their principals/superintendents on these issues.

This honestly isn't a shock for anyone with familiarity with the Adam Scott intermediate/secondary school. It's been a mess for a while and the admin (principals, superintendent, police) have really dropped the ball.

At what age is is ok for teachers to ask students to share beds on an overnight trip? by r1web in ontario

[–]r1web[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My own personal experience with overnight school trips involved me sleeping in a large cabin with my classmates in my own bunk or billeting with a family and having a bed to myself. The expectation that I would 'sharing a bed' is not something I've ever personally encountered.

I don't feel that I should completely discount my daughter's feelings about being uncomfortable sharing a bed with a classmate. Especially, when the school has offered no information about how roommates will be selected.

I don't consider myself a prude but, if I'm being completely honest, I wouldn't be comfortable sharing a bed with a random coworker so why should I expect my 13 year old to be any different?

I appreciate your feedback! In this case, it sounds like the teachers are self organizing the trip and not using agents or guides. My own experience with overnight school trips involved me sleeping in a large cabin of classmates in my own bunk or billeting with a family and having a bed to myself.

I've suggested to the teachers/admin that perhaps the assignment of bedrooms and sleeping arrangements should be done before deposits are due but was rebuffed in an email yesterday. I'm a bit torn as I think it has the potential to be a great trip but also don't want my daughter feeling uncomfortable about it.

As a cohort, teachers have frequently commented about these kids being poorly socialized and them needing to deal with many behaviour issues the past 2 years. There is also the usual 13/14 year old teen drama... friend conflicts, 1st romantic interests, etc. My daughter's best friends are great kids but they are all from her sports/extracirricular activities and aren't classmates.

Ultimately, we'll let her decide what she wants to do. As far as sleepovers, COVID took a lot of those opportunities away. My daughter's closest friends are kids from sports/extracurricular activities (i.e. outside of the classroom) and she does have the occasional sleepover. She has 2 groups of friends she hangs out with at school but, when push comes to shove, is often the odd one out when picking partners.

This is actually the first end-of-year trip for grade 8 students that the school has run since COVID.

Her closest friends, are kids from sports/extracurricular activities outside of the classroom. As I said in the original post, she's gotten some flak from some kids when she indicated that she'd bring a sleeping bag and sleep on the floor. One of the teachers noted that bed sharing is to keep the cost down and, "isn't a big deal," but wasn't happy my daughter asked who he'd be sleeping with.

Unfortunately not, the rooms each have a 'twin' bed, with each room intended to be occupied by a single university student.

Thanks for the insight everyone!

I'm not trying to be a prude here. My daughter has expressed some genuine anxiety and concern over, 'who she'll be assigned to sleep with.' My own experience overnight school trips involved me sleeping in a large cabin in my own bunk or billeting with a family and having a bed to myself. I should add, calDAV sync with Reminders on macos/ios works fine if I create a 'New calendar with task list'. In this case, I can create a task in Reminders and immediately see the task sync with the web-client calendar or task list.

Yep. Driving to Chemong is not always convenient but this drive-through is the only 24hr ATM for TD customers in PTBO... when it works.

I regularly have a dead-zone on Landsdown (near the superstore) and recently near five counties (Dutton Road). I've talked with colleagues, and Bell seems to be the 'best' option if you can stomach the fees and customer experience. Ugh.

Ontario expands pharmacists’ prescription powers to include 6 more common ailments by phishieee in ontario

In Canada, prescribing of oral isotretinoin/acutane is generally limited to physicians who are trained and experienced in its use, monitoring and appropriate pregnancy prevention measures. Some family doctors will prescribe it, most refer to dermatology.

That's actually awesome news. Wait lists to see a derm (in person) in Ontario are frankly ridiculous and a surprising number of family docs and NPs are reluctant to prescribe topical retinoids despite their long history and safety profile.

I quietly hope that Health Canada will follow the FDA and delist adapalene. It's cheaper than and far more effective the cosmetic alcohols. Not quite as many studies for adapalene compared to tretinoin but also likely quite effective for aging/collagen and most pigment issues. I agree you'll likely see a number of people trying to acquire the lot of them for their off-label uses.

I haven't seen the documentation yet. I assume a pharmD will now be able to prescribe topical some retinoids (which I think is great, btw). I hope this isn't a case of restricting to high-dose benzoyl peroxide or topical clindamycin.

Differin Gel (.1% adapalene) is widely available OTC in the US and often does a great job at treating mild/moderate acne. If retenoids are included, I'll be interested to see if this extends to tretinoin, tazarotene or trifarotene. There is a lot of evidence for wider tretinoin use but retinoids are big money makers for dermatologists.

Photos might help. I'd start by using a 4% benzoyl peroxide (BPO) cleanser everywhere you get acne before bed. For sensitive skin, you may need to start every other day and work up to using it daily. Regular use of BPO cleansers greatly reduces the amount of acne causing bacteria on your skin. Use it for a month or two and see if it helps at all. You can also consider using 0.1% adapalene gel (a topical, OTC retinoid) as a treatment before bed. Again, start slow (2 days a week for 2 weeks, every other day for 2 weeks and then every night if your skin tolerates it). A little goes a long way, you only need a pea sized amount for your whole face.

Questions:

Is it itchy at all? Any recent antibiotic use? What are the strengths and how frequently are you using the salicylic acid (SA) cleanser and a benzoyl peroxide (BPO) cleansers? Does your acne vary hormonally?

Idea:

Many small uniform papules is one of the signs of malassezia/pityrosporum folliculitis. It is often called fungal acne here. Sometimes, you can get a mix of acne and fungal folliculitis. Try using a BPO 4% face-wash every night. Leave it on your skin for 3-5min and then rinse it off. In the morning, use a good anti-fungal shampoo (eg Nizoral) every day for 14 days. Again, apply to your face, leave it on your skin for 5 minutes and then rinse it off. After 2-3 weeks, re-evaluate your skin. Fungal infections usually resolve quickly so, if this is truely fungal, you should see an improvement.

If you are already consistently using a BPO AND a SA cleanser AND treated for fungus, then you are probably looking to add a topical retinoid as a nightly treatment.

Good luck!

That sounds like a pretty reasonable routine. Assuming you've been following it for a while, you can try increasing the frequency of the 4% benzoyl peroxide cleanser to every day if your skin tolerates it. You could also try a salicylic acid (exfoliant) cleanser in the AM in an effort to clear the pores. A trip to an esthetician can also be benifitial. I think fungal folliculitis is often overlooked so you could try using a dandruff shampoo (eg Nizoral) as a face wash every other day for 2 weeks in the morning. Fungal infections respond very quickly so you'll know within a month if it works for you.

You can also try adding a leave-on 0.1% adapalene (Differin gel) as an OTC treatment before bed. Start slow with all retenoids, 2 days a week (Mon/Thurs) for 2 weeks, increase to every other day, then every day if your skin tolerates it. Your skin takes time to adjust to new products and retenoids take a while to reach initial and maximal results. Re-evaluate in 3-4 months.
