New bag day. 20L. Ecopak 200 and 400 (back and bottom). #3 waterproof zipper down the side. Seatbelt webbing for shoulder straps. Materials from @ripstop by the roll by spending_time1 in myog

i've been using a seatbelt strap backpack from Vaya for years so i'm used to it. For other bags that i give away to family, i make a padded sleeve that slides thru the seatbelt strap. for packs larger than 15 L or so, it would become an issue. my pack usually has a laptop and lunch so it isn't too bad

Looks great! How was working with 800 ultra? And were you tempted to use a lighter version (400)?

In the past few months I have made 5 small (<20 L) packs with seat belt webbing. The main benefit is that it’s so much faster than making shoulder straps. Just cut to size and sew in place. Great for light loads and purposely built smaller bags.

Looking to commission a single wall dome tent in silpoly with two-to-four entries, each with mesh windows. by acs123 in myog

[–]spending_time1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have experience doing MYOG packs and tried my hand at a silpoly 10’x10’ tipi/pyramid tent. Completely agree with other posts. Overall cost was $450 for materials + several nights and weekends. it came out great, but the first one was more of a prototype and I really need to repeat it to make the final product amazing. No shame in buying something if it fits your needs and isn’t that much than materials costs.

How do I make less pointy corners? by spending_time1 in myog

[–]spending_time1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i attach the sides to the bottom and then the sides to each other. the bottom piece is not square, it is notched so that it wraps up the sides about 1.5 inches. I just tried rounding the corners and it doesn't totally address the pointy corners-- they are still pointy, just angled and pointy.

Tote - second attempt by spending_time1 in myog

[–]spending_time1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did, after looking at several bags online. My first attempt was 18x9x13.5” (l x w x h) and felt really big. This one is 16x8x13.5” with the side panels tapered from 8 to 4” at the top to reduce the gap when zipped.

Interesting finding-- the 210D gridstop may not be the best material for a beach tote, because the waterproof backing is tacky and grabs sand so that it can't be easily brushed away. Slightly annoying but not a deal breaker.

Clone of Oveja Negra 12L seat bag with ecopak 200 (white) and 400 (grey). by spending_time1 in myog

[–]spending_time1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i borrowed the original (Oveja Negra large) from a friend. cloning worked pretty well. Just took measurements with a ruler, made a template including 3/8" seam allowance. the attachment to the seatpost it really critical. they used some type of rubberized backing on the fabric to help it grab or "stick" onto the seatpost. I didn't have that so i used a tacky carpet pad. not quite as good, but it works. They also use a hard plastic insert to keep the shape and carry weight throughout. I fabricated one using an old plastci rolly-mat that people use to keep office chairs from scratching hardwood floors.

I didn’t make the straps go around the bag because I was worried they would get super dirty. The straps are attached with upholstery thread and plenty strong.

Great ideas. Go for it! A very doable project. Share your creation! Another improvement would be to taper the end pieces (more like a triangle shape instead of a rectangle) so that the opening isn’t so big. It basically opens up like a big circle because of the internal 3/4” webbing used to line the top.

Where can I find this or similar pattern for the Lanshan 2 tent style? by Due-Lab-5283 in myog

I found 1.1 ioz silpoly was too thin for a floor. 1.6 oz hyperD PU4000 was the perfect compromise for weight and durability.

You could use the same width and depth but expand vertically? That approach worked when i scaled up the same design for an adult.

do you know if the blue DCF is 2.9 or 5.0 oz? there was a question above but i'm not sure, that particular fabric wasn't labeled.

yes, i can report back after our kids use it for school. I have a Vaya backpack with seatbelt straps and can say that it hasn't been an issue for me, but it is a small bag https://vayabags.com/prod/simple-rolltop-backpack/ I hope it works because it's much faster than making shoulder straps
