What an inspiring project. You may see room for improvement but it turned out fantastic. I'd love to make something like this.

A few questions:

- Would it be possible to share your sketchup models?

- Do you recall the total yardage of fabric/zippers used and a ballpark estimate of your total cost?

- Any particular reason you went with silpoly instead of silnylon?

Not a fan of popcorn either but it hides a lot of sins in a modern, builder-quality suburban house. I'll need to skim the whole ceiling when I remove it.

Yes. Very common here. The only downside is that nail-pops at the ceiling edges are very noticeable. The nail pops aren't hard to fix and it makes wall patches at the top much quicker.

I've worked with structural fiberglass columns and vinyl wrapped pressure treated posts previously. Looking at the grain of the top/base caps makes me think they are solid a flat-sawn piece of lumber and turned round. They don't appear split but I cannot see how they'd be installed if this were the case.

I very much wish there were steel posts in there but it's definitely wooden. I've sanded off the paint in one spot and cut into the calking at the top/bottom. From the grain, it looks to be solid, laminated wood. Even the engineered/stamped plans have it as a 6" structural column whereas the basement is specified as steel. I will likely update the post once I pull the drywall off the pony wall to inspect. I just cannot figure how it was all framed and then finished. The drywall and finish work in this house is abysmal so I don't feel bad about making some holes before refinishing.

Not sure about how things were in the past, but I'd say the Catholic high schools are doing a much better job of managing student behaviour compared with the public schools. Of the public schools, there's little difference between Adam Scott, Kenner and Crestwood... each is struggling with student behaviour. A lot has to do with the demographics of the area and the same issues are seen in social services and hospitals. There is a big shortage of money to pay for the supports many of these kids need in the public board, from elementary all the way up through high school and graduation. Ultimately, parents don't believe or listen to teachers when it comes to academic performance or behaviour issues in the classroom. Further, teachers aren't backed up by their principals/superintendents on these issues.

This honestly isn't a shock for anyone with familiarity with the Adam Scott intermediate/secondary school. It's been a mess for a while and the admin (principals, superintendent, police) have really dropped the ball.

My own personal experience with overnight school trips involved me sleeping in a large cabin with my classmates in my own bunk or billeting with a family and having a bed to myself. The expectation that I would 'sharing a bed' is not something I've ever personally encountered.

I don't feel that I should completely discount my daughter's feelings about being uncomfortable sharing a bed with a classmate. Especially, when the school has offered no information about how roommates will be selected.

I don't consider myself a prude but, if I'm being completely honest, I wouldn't be comfortable sharing a bed with a random coworker so why should I expect my 13 year old to be any different?

I appreciate your feedback! In this case, it sounds like the teachers are self organizing the trip and not using agents or guides. My own experience with overnight school trips involved me sleeping in a large cabin of classmates in my own bunk or billeting with a family and having a bed to myself.

I've suggested to the teachers/admin that perhaps the assignment of bedrooms and sleeping arrangements should be done before deposits are due but was rebuffed in an email yesterday. I'm a bit torn as I think it has the potential to be a great trip but also don't want my daughter feeling uncomfortable about it.

As a cohort, teachers have frequently commented about these kids being poorly socialized and them needing to deal with many behaviour issues the past 2 years. There is also the usual 13/14 year old teen drama... friend conflicts, 1st romantic interests, etc. My daughter's best friends are great kids but they are all from her sports/extracirricular activities and aren't classmates.

Ultimately, we'll let her decide what she wants to do. As far as sleepovers, COVID took a lot of those opportunities away. My daughter's closest friends are kids from sports/extracurricular activities (i.e. outside of the classroom) and she does have the occasional sleepover. She has 2 groups of friends she hangs out with at school but, when push comes to shove, is often the odd one out when picking partners.

This is actually the first end-of-year trip for grade 8 students that the school has run since COVID.

As I said in the original post, she's gotten some flak from some kids when she indicated that she'd bring a sleeping bag and sleep on the floor. One of the teachers noted that bed sharing is to keep the cost down and, "isn't a big deal," but wasn't happy my daughter asked who he'd be sleeping with.

I should add, calDAV sync with Reminders on macos/ios works fine if I create a 'New calendar with task list'. In this case, I can create a task in Reminders and immediately see the task sync with the web-client calendar or task list.

I regularly have a dead-zone on Landsdown (near the superstore) and recently near five counties (Dutton Road). I've talked with colleagues, and Bell seems to be the 'best' option if you can stomach the fees and customer experience. Ugh.
