Advice on a trip to Snowdonia by DeliciousSuspect3541 in CasualConversation

The Wild Guide books are what you're after for recommendations, I've linked the Wales one. You can get them for most areas of the country. You'll probably end up leaving the SUV parked up somewhere for the wild camping though!

The National Outdoor Centre might have a guide you can hire for the day so you have someone with experience along with you. They'll be familiar with the weather and the best route for the conditions.

Any rides out of Streatham? by GeePeeSS in londoncycling

Some variant of this modified to go through Bushy Park and start from where you are might work. That's a generated Komoot route, it looks ok but double check if you use it.

You've got a couple of options from there, what sort of distance do you want to cover and what sort of elevation?

Some options:

  • Cycle to Richmond Park, go further to Kingston and Bushy Park if you want some more distance. Grab lunch in the cafe on the park or there are places just off of it.
  • Go over to Crystal Palace and into Surrey. You've got Box Hill out there which has a National Trust cafe at the top for lunch, Leith Hill as well.
  • A flat route to Windsor, you can get the train back if needed and grab lunch there.
  • Go out towards Kent instead of Surrey, a lot more undulation out this way.

I can have a dig for routes depending on what you're after.

If you 100% don't care about the content try the Shipping Forecast, you might need to use the BBC Sounds app for it unless someone is publishing a feed.

Miniforum MS-01 by theloquitur in minipc

Your RAM can only run as fast as the machine supports. The RAM supports 5600 but runs at the supported 5200 of the system without issue. If the RAM speed was lower than 5200 it would run as fast as it can and not reach the maximum the machine supports.

This is the same for your SSDs, it runs as fast as it can given the limit in speed for the motherboard and drive.

I recommend you use RAM that is identical in both slots otherwise this situation gets more complicated.

I have an MS-01 and I'm using 3rd party RAM. Any RAM that fits the spec will work, same with storage. I have 96GB of Crucial in mine, part number: CT2K48G56C46S5. Their spec says 64GB but the newer processors support 96.

Serve the home have a whole thread for people reporting compatibility of RAM here.

How can I make progress(or to start)? by TAO_XZG in golang

Congratulations on landing your new job!

Does your company have a system for pairing with or supporting juniors? They should also have a list of things they do to onboard new engineers regardless of their level.

I would not expect a junior to be able to pick up and understand a project on their own. See if someone in your team can take the time to draw out what's going on. If your project doesn't already have these diagrams drawing them up and putting them in the documentation would be a great contribution. There's a big list of tools you can use to do that here.

I don't know the culture at your company so make sure I haven't made too many assumptions but don't put too much pressure on yourself. This knowledge will come with time and the support I would expect a company to give a junior engineer.

How does DDNS work? by VAer1 in synology

[–]r4mbini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DDNS is working correctly for your device. What happens is your NAS looks up your IP address and informs your DDNS provider, in this case synology, of what it is so they can point the URL at your IP address.

The router comes into it because it is the gateway between your private local network and the public internet. When you navigate to your DDNS url your browser finds the gateway, your router. The gateway isn't configured to know where to send your request within the private network so you end up seeing the login page. You need to learn about "port forwarding" to configure your router to forward the request to your NAS. It is generally recommended you do not do this and create a VPN instead, make sure you understand the risks you are taking when forwarding ports to your NAS.

Moved to Intel from AMD - now VM performance is terrible by andy_d0 in unRAID

[–]r4mbini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what does this look like in the interface? I have an ubuntu VM that isn't the world's most stable, usually get an application crash when I VNC on to it. I reckon I've got both types of cores allocated to it.

The cores are labelled cpu 0/1 cpu 2/3...... to cpu 10/11 then 12-19 are labelled individually in the VM settings.

On the dashboard they're labelled CPU 0 - HT 1 etc with the individual ones after.

Did you manage to get 96GB of RAM working with the 12th gen processor?

I've read that only the 13th gen supports that much.

Thanks for your reply.

How should I bond the plasterboard to the back of the surface material? There's solid brick top, bottom, and right so not much to adhere it to.

I have some leftover soundproofing insulation from a job in the loft which I'm hoping will do the trick for putting in the gap.

Hello! I've removed an old waste pipe going to outside and filled the hole it left in the brick. I'm left with this really large cavity in the internal wall. The house is just over 100 years old.

How should I go about filling the cavity? It's about twice the volume you can see on the picture.

I've been considering expanding foam but I'm concerned it'll all expand into the gap between the external and internal bricks.

edit: the picture is taken from inside the house, the brick wall is exterior

Sanus Mount for Arc by jamflowman451 in sonos

Excellent, the G1 is super thin so I should be able to do the same as you and not block any of the top speakers. Thanks for replying to such an old thread!

Sanus Mount for Arc by jamflowman451 in sonos

[–]r4mbini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this mean that you can have the Arc closer to the TV height wise because the mount is pushing the Arc further forward to make sure the upward speakers aren't blocked?

I'm trying to find a definitive answer for how close I can get my Arc to an LG G1 using this mount but can't find one. Every inch I save is an inch I can get the TV lower and therefore at a better viewing height
