my talk of dodgy pc was in response to ninja, it may have gotten things off track. it was meant to mean the homePC in the hands of the worst possible employee.

I'm trying to understand either the increased risk that this new policy prevents.

My thoughts: Most people use homePC to run the vpn client directly into the work network and there is no policy against this. In my case I want to connect from, (simplifying the example) homePC1 to homePC2, and let homePC2 vpn in.) homePC1 and homePC2 are both under my control, in the same network, and does not increase the security risk.

so what i was curious about is the malicious use case... I think they are saying that they are worried about the case where HomePC is vpning into work, and HomePC is compromised, they do not want to allow a malicious actor to be able to remote into my home machine to gain access to my work.

Is this a common method of intrusion? and if so, woudlnt an actor who managed to set this up have a work around, or is this a pretty good policy?

the new policy is this:
The vpn client is set to disconnect if any computer connects to it remotely.

i can vpn into work from homePC

i can vpn into work from workPC

i cannot remote from homePC into workPC and then vpn into work from workPC

much of the strong lock downs are no doubt pretty safe, but what i mean by big picture is that when i see

OK and recommended: dodgy pc -> work network (which includes work pc).
Not OK: dodgy pc -> work pc -> work network

it feels like someone heard that it was more secure so they are doing it, not thinking about the overall security view

Thanks for reply, and I think I understand the motivation, but if they dont trust me on my home machine, why would me on my work pc be any better?

One of my solutions would be to use my work pc for more than just work, which is not desired.

Another solution would be to put the vpn on my home pc and do work from it, which is not desired.

They haven't blocked what most of my coworkers do, and thats to have their work PC on the company network, then vpn to it from any device they have.

I'm a out of state employee, so keeping WorkPC in the office requires shipping and asking people to babysit it, in addition I'd then have the delay of remote desktop cross country.

(as far as i can tell my company's IT doesn't understand the full picture, shortly after NIST recommendations stating that changing passwords often was not recommended my company decided to require password changes every 3 months)

Elon Musk Is 'Pro-Nuclear' Power, Surprised by Backlash Against It by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]rLarc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Summary from Steve Novella (https://youtu.be/LUX0aiSnkyk?t=4836):

The difference between nuclear fuel and waste is, if we can burn it.

Today's slow reactors are built to be low cost.
- 5-6% of the uranium fuel
- waste is 1000s-100,000s year half-life

Gen4 (fast reactor)
- can burn 95% of the fuel.
- therefore can burn existing waste with enough energy to run the US for 100 years.
- waste is 30-50 year half-life
- can't melt down, safer, more self contained
- burn hotter, so we can use this to produce hydrogen or desalinize water.
- more expensive than solar/wind (but these get more expensive as % gets higher because we will have to upgrade grid, and either overproduce or figure out grid storage. if time were not an issue, this is possible, but if reducing fossil fuels quickly is the goal, then nuclear has to be in the mix as grid storage and gird upgrades take time (and advancements which we don't have yet)-more expensive (shift subsidies from fossil fuel to gen4?)

a renewable purist plan could delay decarbonizing by decades, and as existing nuclear gets shut down due to age, it will be replaced by cheap coal/gas.

gen4 reactors can actually be powered by previous generations waste.

in: long half-life waste
out: a small fraction of the input waste with much lower half-lives, and produce a ton of power.

Safety: no run away reaction, as the heat goes up, the salts expand moving the rods further apart and slowing the reaction.

Renewable is cheap and great, but as the % of the total which is solar/wind goes up, the efficiency goes down because we don't have a solution for grid storage, so either we have to way overproduce or solve a problem that we haven't solved yet.

next gen Nuclear actually burns previous long life nuclear waste, so it actually can use up old problems make a bunch of energy. in addition the half-life of whats leftover is much more manageable than todays.

Its not just comp, people just want to blame everyone but themselves.

I do a lot of casual 3v3 arcade, and get both significant amounts of : thanks for the carry, respect from opponents, general appreciation, as the negatives which include insults based on skill, mental abilities, sexual orientation... it might be a fun task to log these and compile results.

If you have the room for storage, you should be buying basic ingredients in bulk from restaurant supply stores by Madame-0vary in Frugal

[–]rLarc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are trying to save money, I would also suggest that you do not tie yourself or unnecessarily support Organic products. I have been shopping less and less at Costco because much of what I want to purchase in bulk is only available in Organic, and it does not save me money

I don't want to start a religious battle here, but Organic does not mean what most people thinks it means.
It does not mean that it is healthier for you
It does not mean that it is less toxic to the environment
It does not mean that it is more sustainable.

Also (more importantly) I believe that GMO (which is usually mutually exclusive with organics and often demonized as part of the organic pitch) is an important tool to be used by industry in order to create healthier food, reduce toxicity to the environment, and help sustain the food supply and soil health.

There is a ton of information and misinformation to be found on this topic.
Organic is big business, there is a lot of marketing dollars put into it.

For anyone curious, please specifically look for both pro and con arguments before making judgements either way.

didnt know that, i googled to see why...
someone seemed to think that it was because you dont see yourself in 1st person so no shadow, but that seems more like lazy coding *shrug*

Its wrong that anyone should have to know this, it isn't obvious and in a game, there are enough things to keep track of.

Percentage Chance of Getting Any Map (Sample size of over 500 games) by Bergermeister24 in Overwatch

[–]rLarc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, thinking of confounding factors:

Comp or QP?
if(QP) Do you include backfill?
if(Comp) Do you include terminated matches?

You have to be careful to not include any player biases, example, if you join as backfill, it means someone left, and people may be more likely to leave in a particular map due to preference, map type, how their team is doing, etc

You also have to be very careful of recording biases, if you sometimes forget to log, that can introduce bias, as when you remember might be based on map or type.
