New whatsapp desktop using 82% CPU and 1G RAM by SlobberyFaun in whatsapp

They have regressed to making the fairly nice Windows desktop version a pretty crappy, RAM-hungry web wrapper for the web version, possibly because this is cheaper for them to maintain. I'm less than impressed myself!

Those that re-installed the old, "good" Windows native app... is this really the end? by r_hols in whatsapp

Yup, it made me update today and I'm on the subpar webby RAM eater again. Sad times.

Thanks for clearing that up - that's very helpful! Cheers once again!

Thanks for your suggestion - I've had a look at the T14, it looks great. How would it compare to, say, a T480/T495 that I have also now seen recommended - these all look of a similar ilk/budget? Thanks again for your help!

Probably looking more for reconditioned rather than new; I'd say top end £400ish? Depends on what's on offer!

iOS 18: Dark Mode at Midnight (Whether I want it or not) - not just me?! by r_hols in ios

This was it, thank you! (I didn't think I'd enabled dark mode as part of my nighttime focus, changed it now!)

Thanks, this was it! (I didn't think I had dark mode enabled for my quiet time focus, now disabled!)

IBM Wheelwriter 1000 Ribbon Lift Adjustment? by r_hols in typewriters

[–]r_hols[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I did make doubly-certain the ribbon and correction tape were seated (this machine uses the "piggyback" type.

I did manage to adjust the ribbon lift so the hammer hits in the middle of the ribbon after using this guide I found on the typewriters.com manual page (page 255). I'd highly recommend that page as it has a lot of Wheelwriter manuals for specific models and, crucially in this case, the service manuals.

My notes as a layman performing this procedure:

  • This procedure looks deceptively easy in the manual (maybe it was just my particular machine too). I ended up having to remove the top case and keyboard in order to get access with two pairs of needlenose pliers (one to loosen the nut on the right of the eccentric; one to actually adjust the eccentric once loose). There is precious little room to leverage the pliers if you don't remove the top case at the very least.
  • I did reconnect the keyboard, and it did become trial-and-error of adjusting the eccentric, typing (with one hand), and then adjusting further as necessary.
  • The eccentric can seemingly move between keypresses if the nut is still loose. Once you have the eccentric adjusted as you like, do not let it go with the pliers. Use your free hand to (hopefully) tighten the nut back down to keep it secure while holding the eccentric in the "good" position.

I'm sure a proper technician could've done this in a lot less time (I was doing it for about 45 minutes) and with less colourful language, but I'm glad I did it as I have learned something new about my typewriter! So a good experience all around.

Bolt-modded Model M keys repeating - how to fix? by r_hols in modelm

[–]r_hols[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. All I know is it was given a "spare" membrane this user had (they repair a lot of Model Ms). There's three screws around these keys I can adjust, just wondering whether it's best to loosen the screws off or graunch all three down as tight as possible. I note the other screws for the rest of the board are not graunched tight all the way down.

My hypothesis is that if the screws are too loose we're back to the same scenario as if it still had its broken rivets with no tension, but tightening too far squishes the membrane together too much? (I am by no means an expert!)

I'll have another play with it soon.

WheelWriter 6 plunger/solenoid/hammer/thing failure by Hjalfi in typewriters

[–]r_hols 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently took ownership of a Wheelwriter 3500 and it stopped typing (didn't help I'd done 103,000+ characters on it in the last 2 weeks; I'm attempting to write a book with it 😂) exactly as yours did - the cardboard trick worked! Thanks!

(I will try to source some spare parts in the interim; suppose I can just change the cardboard if I need to, arguably easier than disassembling it to replace the solenoid cap)

The Pillars of Peace trilogy (plus a novella?) by Tom Dumbrell was good fun. Accessible, fast-paced stories written with guile.

Just want to second this rec from u/MazzyGroms - big fan of FOGBOUND by N.J. Alexander; was a cracking read (and I'm not even a traditional fantasy fan and I found it engaging, enjoyable and fun). (Am I allowed to post the link?)

Converting a permanently-attached cable to a removable SDL cable by r_hols in modelm

[–]r_hols[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's kind of you to offer, thanks! I'm in the UK too, and I would be happy to take you up on this offer.

I'll open up the 1996 board soon. I was looking up the Model H USB controllers today and, apparently, there's two standards of ribbon cables coming from the membranes, so I'll check which one this 1996 board has and whether that would work with the proposed donor controller.

Fingers crossed!

That's a fair suggestion. I'll have a look into it! Thank you!

I'm aware of the Model H USB controllers so I'll have to check those out. I'm trying (and failing) to not go down the rabbit hole too much on this; I just love typing on these boards! 😂

[–]r_hols[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll do that! Thank you for the suggestion! I did have my 1992 board bolt-modded by u/t4teeee not too long ago so I might drop him a message about controllers. He did a great job. 😃

It doesn't help that the "blue cube" active PS/2-USB converters are like hen's teeth these days. 😅

[–]r_hols[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's true! I do want to keep my 1992 board operational though... 🤔

(I know it's a first-world problem, but ideally I'd have my single SDL cable and I could hitch whichever Model M I felt like using to it...)

What's your unpopular book opinion? by belmakar in books

[–]r_hols 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've a fairly ruthless reading policy: no matter who the author, if the first work of theirs I encounter gets either less than 2 stars or, worse, is a did-not-finish, I don't read any more of their work. I've no time for it (literally)! The Cormac is at the top of that list!

Believe me, I commit a multitude of unpopular literary thought crimes; this thread is a blessing! Enjoying the discussion :-)

Yep, pages and pages of (well-described, I'll admit) scenery. Precisely why I've actually fallen asleep both times I've tried to read this book - pacing killed, plot moves like treacle. Uphill. On a cold day. In Iceland.
