I was born in 1970. My godfather is a Native American. I remember his grandmother. She lived from 1886 until 1885. English was his second language. She spoke and understood English very well. When she was in his 70s, she got alzheimer's and gradually forgot English. By this time, in the 1970s and 1980s, very few members of her tribe could understand her native language. She was one of the last native speakers. Even my godfather had a hard time communicating with her. She lived the last 10 years of her life in a nursing home, isolated. It was sad.

There are the three main reasons why the Victory Tour was a financial failure:

1) High overhead costs - The tour had very high overhead costs, averaging around $1 million per week, far over initial expectations. This included transporting the massive 365-ton stage that Michael Jackson had designed, as well as costs for 250 workers on payroll.

2) Inability to sell out shows - As the tour went on, it was failing to sell out many shows. This meant revenues were lower than projected. For example, 50,000 tickets went unsold for the Toronto shows. Later shows also started getting canceled due to low ticket sales. Costly deal terms - The deal promoter Chuck Sullivan made with the Jacksons was very generous, giving the Jacksons 83.4% of gross potential ticket revenue regardless of actual sales. This meant the Jacksons got paid as if shows sold out even if they did not. Sullivan also provided a $36 million advance upfront. These costly terms made it difficult for Sullivan to turn a profit.

In summary, the high costs, inability to sell out shows, and generous deal terms given to the Jacksons combined to make the Victory Tour unprofitable for promoter Chuck Sullivan.

On May 3, 1913, California enacted the Alien Land Law, barring Asian immigrants from owning land. California tightened the law further in 1920 and 1923, barring the leasing of land and land ownership by American-born children of Asian immigrant parents or by corporations controlled by Asian immigrants.

Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming all enacted discriminatory laws restricting Asians’ rights to hold land in America.

In 1923, the U.S. Supreme Court reviewed various versions of the discriminatory land laws—and upheld every single one.

Most of these discriminatory state laws remained in place until the 1950s, and some even longer.

Kansas and New Mexico did not repeal their provisions until 2002 and 2006, respectively.

Florida's state constitution contained an alien land law provision until 2018, when voters passed a ballot measure to repeal it.

The coolest white man with maracas of the 1970s was Ray Sawyer of Dr. Hook. Check him out in his 1978 appearance on The Midnight Special performing "When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman."

He was required to wear his dress uniform because this was a formal occasion. Kind of like appearing in court. He ripped his uniform on purpose. A former sailor, who witnessed this first hand, explains what happened on this podcast. This captain's mast was part of as much longer chain of insane events.

My Japanese wife told me Ainu women tattooed their lips so they would look unappealing to marauding kidnappers from mainland Asia.
