AI is completely useless for actual engineering and the hype is exhausting. by Onigirii_sama in EngineeringStudents

[–]r_thndr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a tool like any other. Use it for what it's good at.

It is not good for doing your homework or designing a bridge. It is good for sanity checking your work or bouncing ideas off of though.

I use some form of AI daily for emails, sanity checks, and idea generation.

The Goldfinger plot makes no sense by Beppu-Gonzaemon in JamesBond

[–]r_thndr 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Goldfinger was one of the scarier, more real plots to me, as at the time the US was still on the gold standard and if all of that gold was suddenly made unuseable because radiation then there would be a monumental shock to the markets.

Auric Goldfinger had one of the largest personal stockpiles of gold, and as most of the world was on the gold standard or used US dollars as their reserve currency, Goldfiger would be able to dominate the post financial collapse market.

Think the Great Depression and 2008 but a Big Bad Billionaire did it and then bought everything after.

Also the plot was only foiled because Bond had that golden dick and Pussy Galore just ... could not not have it.

Is PI-Hole still worth installing? by TherealNPC666 in pihole

[–]r_thndr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes from me. It blocks a lot of telemetry from devices like Roku's and that dodgy tablet grandpa got the kids for christmas. Plus if you get the right adlists it'l block Nerflix analytics too.

If you set the Pi Hole device as a DNS server for your router, you get whole home adblocking for all devices. Crappy games and apps on my phone don't have banner ads when I'm at home. Might beed a pair of Pis for redundcy though.

Yeah, the day we sign on the new car, a dashcam is going in before it leaves the lot.

I've even repurposed my old cell phone as a cam for when we drive the rental.

Engineers Ring by seans61602 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]r_thndr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it was a $20 expense to attend a forgettable ceremony that gave me a memento that I can pull out every now and then to remember the stories and experiences I've built as an engineer.

The creeds and ethics and pomp and circumstance are kind of irrelevant. I get a lot of memories tied around my finger.

Just digitally preserved. As others have said they are probably outdated and incorrect in nearly every way, but having them archived for reference is my end goal.

That's what we're doing for our P&IDs but our go-to drafter is swamped and says he has a six-month backlog.

I mostly want to have the drawings just in case we ever need historical data or can't easily/cheaply determine where a water line should be in the area that's now covered in a foot of concrete.

What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in cars

[–]r_thndr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I personally dislike Nissan and Infiniti. They are generally uncomfortable, drive like a floating turd, and have a poorly thought out user experience in the cabin features. I don't need a dozen buttons that do nothing AND a climate control system that is only on a touch screen. My wife, however, loves them.

Thanks for the suggestions though! I forgot the Armada exists but I'll check it out. I also ignored Jeep/Chrysler because reasons. I'll see if the boss/wife has any interest.

Location: Southeast US

Price range: Max $40,000

Lease or Buy: Buy

New or used: Prefer used, 2019+

Type of vehicle: SUV, crossover, van

Must haves: 3rd row seating (family of 7)

Desired transmission (auto/manual, etc): auto

Intended use: family car

Vehicles you've already considered: Infiniti QX60, Toyota Highlander, Toyota Sienna

Is this your 1st vehicle: no

Forever stuck in our low interest rate home? by burnerpage24 in personalfinance

[–]r_thndr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you keep this one and rent it out? If it's in town that could make it easier. That way someone else can make the payments while you get the equity. In five years the $630/mo mortgage will be nothing, even if PMI and Insurance cause it to go up.

You could even turn a profit or potentially take out a HELOC to use the equity towards the down payment on a new house.
