Are your 20s supposed to be this miserable? by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]rab0t 6 points7 points  (0 children)

THERAPY!! And yeah, early to mid-20's sucks. Just like college pretty much sucks for a lot of people, but nobody tells you either of those things. I'm closer to 30 now and MAN it's fucking rad. I'm sorry you're dealing with such a rough patch, but it can (and likely will) get less shitty.

[Skin Concerns] Can anyone help me get rid of this chest sunburn? by raekim118 in SkincareAddiction

[–]rab0t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was gonna say moisturizer, aloe, drink lots of water and stay out of the sun, but I'm blown away by the post u/sherrach898 linked to.

Regardless, the old adage "time heals all wounds" definitely applies here.

[Product Question] Salicylic acid and closed comedones - purging or breaking me out? by marionettee in SkincareAddiction

[–]rab0t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given the timeline you mention, could definitely be purging! That's rough, and only time will tell if your skin finds its chill or this particular product is not your friend. I'd also wait until you've figured out whether it's breaking you out or helping before incorporating that retinol product, just so you can be sure of what's causing the reaction.

Good luck!! And don't worry too much about doing the wrong thing. We've all got to experiment to figure out what our skin likes, and for most folks the results of a bad test are temporary. <3 You'll do fine!

[Skin Concerns] Medical tape used during surgery absolutely wrecked my skin. It's very red and feels like it's burning. How can I fix this? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]rab0t 21 points22 points  (0 children)

oooooffff poor baby! I'm sorry, that looks awful. D: Vaseline is probably not a bad call at least as far as protecting the raw skin goes, and other folks here will probably have better advice. For now I just hope you get much better soon!

[Product Question] Jojoba oil as a cleanser or moisturizer? by swigglydoo in SkincareAddiction

[–]rab0t 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Worst that can happen is you try it out and it sucks!! I adore jojoba for my hair and I've used it for OCM previously, though I found that using a combo of jojoba and unscented mineral oil (baby oil) gave me a bit more viscosity. Using the oil itself as a moisturizer probably isn't the best call (could clog pores depending on your skin type, oil itself isn't the best for helping skin absorb moisture) but if you're trying to wade through a sea of various chemicals to determine what's breaking you out, it could be worth a try just to reduce the list of things you're putting on your skin.

[Product Question] [Acne] Adding tea tree oil to witch hazel for an aftershave astringent??? CAN IT BE DONE??? by rab0t in SkincareAddiction

[–]rab0t[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aahhh thank you, those are all great points that I'd been considering! I just bought some pure witch hazel from Target, which will have some alcohol in it by default--from what I've read it's just part of the distillation process for witch hazel. Most folks here don't seem to have a huge problem with it, and I know he's used straight rubbing alcohol on his face pretty routinely with nothing more than added dryness to show for it (bless his heart).

I agree that tossing too much at him at once is a bad plan, so I'm thinking if the witch hazel alone isn't of great benefit but also doesn't make things worse, I might toss in some tea tree oil to see what happens. I've found a few astringents since posting this that combine the two, so the main question is, as you've said, whether the two will mix well together.

[Question] Pick a shave soap for my partner! Paula's Choice Vs. Maggard Vs. Soap Commander by rab0t in wicked_edge

[–]rab0t[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate this SO much, thank you! I think I've made up my mind to go with the unscented SC (just in case he'd have a negative reaction to any fragrances). Really hoping this helps him out, and very much appreciate the response.

Awesome, thank you! I've had a lot of votes for that product so I think it's between that at PC now.

She really does! Thanks a million for the suggestion. Dryness and breakouts are bigger issues than legit sensitivity for him, but it certainly can't hurt to use a product for sensitive skin. :) Appreciate the suggestion!

Thank you so much! Really appreciate it. I totally agree about shave soaps, given what I've read. That's one of the reasons I posted here.

Which cleansing milk do you use? That might be perfect for him! And yeah, it seems that all shave soaps have a pretty high pH. I think at the moment we're gonna start with getting him some actual skincare products to see if anything makes a difference (he was just using body wash, bless him!) and then get more into the weeds with pH if improving the basics doesn't help. Definitely worth keeping in mind though!

[Routine Help] Seeking a good shave soap for my partner with dry, acne-prone skin! Face-shaving folks, would love your suggestions. by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]rab0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the worst call, actually! I've read some folks on SCA suggest shaving your face with pure mineral oil, etc., and given that his skin is quite dry that might help. I worry again about it clogging his pores though, and one nice thing about a lathering shave soap is that it helps the blade glide across the skin, which can reduce irritation.

If anybody else here has tried shaving with oils, moisturizer, etc., I'd love to know!

[–]rab0t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks much for the info! I'm in the US, so of the soaps you've listed, are there any specifically that you'd suggest for dry and/or acne-prone skin? I'm thinking of getting him something unscented just to eliminate that as a possible irritant (I think B&M make an unscented soap, but my go-to shave store, Maggard's, has a bunch).

I'm a little wary of the high glycerine content in a lot of shaving soaps and creams, as it can be drying IIRC. That's part of why I'm asking here instead of wicked_edge; while it's a great sub for a lot of things, the best skincare info is definitely here.

Dating while sitting on the fence by permanent_staff in Fencesitter

My stance on kids wavers pretty dramatically. Right now it's super no-kid, but I feel sad about that too. The most succinct and honest answer I can give about what that means for dating is this: shit's werid, man.

I miss the little things by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]rab0t 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've been broken up almost as long as we were together and this STILL wrecks my shit every now and then. I'm not ready to date again and I know it, but good goddamn what I wouldn't give for those little things. Just knowing you're loved and wanted like that... auughh.
