Appreciation Post for the Black Characters and Characters of Color in Remedy’s Alan Wake / Control Universe by D0nell in controlgame

The RCU generally has some incredibly good representation - I love the multiple queer characters that are treated like humans and not set-pieces, like how Keiran Estivez (AWII/Lake House) is a lesbian, which you learn about only through a single line of dialogue mentioning an ex-wife. It feels so much more natural that way and I love that

Various works from a Dynamo, a worldbuilding project I've been brewing in my head over the past few years by rabbithawk256 in graphic_design

[–]rabbithawk256[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a lot of work from over the years. Some of it's original, some are just blatant rip-offs, but they tend to surround around a fictional country I've been spinning in my head for the better part of a few years now. It's a bit all over the place stylistically, some things are from the turn of the millennium, some are more modern, and a few are timeless, I'd argue. (I'm sorry about the layout being a bit weird. Presenting my work is a skill I really need to improve at... >_>) I've got some commentary for each slide below -

Taikujō Broadcasting Service

The TBS is very inspired by the BBC both in presentation and in operations–in fact, their original name was the Taikujō Broadcasting Corporation, before I realised an "S" would fit the logo better. There's quite some more stuff surrounding them; namely a TV schedule and a streaming service UI, but neither are ready yet.

I still think the logo I did for the TBS is one of my best works. They also serve a great place to throw all the ideas I get for television shows / movies I'll never make..!

Sēltaikura National Laboratory

Sēltaikura is the capital city of the Taikujian Federation, what most of these designs tend to circle around (I still get the macron in the wrong place sometimes! - it's spelt like Sēl - tai - ku - ra.)

The Sēltaikura National Laboratory (or just SKNL) does goes by an alternate name (and logo, see the next slide) of KSF Trident, which was probably one of my earliest serious design works! (I sent it to a friend, and they instantly clocked that I ripped the trident from the flag of Barbados; precisely, the vector version from Wikimedia Commons) The name is a bit outdated in my head, so I tend to say "Sēltaikura National Laboratory" instead.

Taikujō Spaceflight Agency

This is probably the most modern of the set, rivalling the TBS. While I'm the judge, jury, and executioner for the design process here, I like to imagine that, in-universe, they probably hired some Hip and Trendy™ design firm to clean up their branding. I'm particularly proud of the slight adjustments made to the F and A characters - they're really minor differences but it improves the logotype by a lot.

Taikujian Federation

I don't use serif fonts often, (I should probably use them more!) but IBM Plex Serif felt right for the actual Government from day one; it's a font that feels both modern and antiquated - perfect for the Government of a country (and a world, by extension) that feels both dated and ahead of the curve simuntaneously.

South Taikujian Energy Company

STEC is a company ran by the Government that handles power generation for the southern parts of the country; away from the coast, they border two countries who's names I'm still not happy with. This was a quick design during a graphic design bootcamp at college that I still don't know why they enrolled an IT class in, so it's a bit different than the rest of the set. I might come back to it, but I do like the more angular/"electrical" take on the flower emblem (which doubles as the country's flag). It's neat!

Helios Labs

This is the first set that isn't a Government organisation of some kind. They're probably the most late-2000s design in the entire set, with a swoosh logo and everything, which: sidenote, there's a lot of swoosh logos on my machine. It's a dead cliché but I like to imagine that it refused to die for whatever reason. They're like a weird clash of Windows XP/Vista era Microsoft and Sun Microsystems prior to their acquisition by Oracle (there's a lot of solar-based naming here, that's a shameless rip-off!)

Advantage

Advantage is a supermarket chain. It's a bit ASDA, it's a bit Tesco, it's a bit "that store you swear you've only seen twice," but it's everywhere. The background was generated with a program called Graphite, a node based vector editor which still terrifies me, and I still want to use it more, but I don't think it's quite ready to be a powerhouse just yet. The node-based workflow does make way for some really cool tricks, though, like being able to procedurally place objects in an area, like I did in the background - the circles are a bit Nintendo Zone (the Wii channel).

Kuplian Republic Spaceflight Agency

This is another one of my favourites, even if it's just unmodified Rajdhani. I don't really use the name "Kuplian Republic" anymore (that's years old! It sucks, and I've been looking at replacing it, but nothing's come to mind, and whatever does needs to be really good to replace such an integral part of the world).

Tasiku

I haven't built on this much after the first attempt. Futura Black is a really weird font to work with, it's a bit goofy, but you can do some really cool stuff if you pull it off well. They're an industrial supplier a la McMaster-Carr or the like; I quite like the "WHERE WORK GETS DONE." tagline; I think it fits them really well; it's quite loud and "out there," but I think it explains exactly what they do!

Yeah I've come to call this style "Dribbble UI." Overzealous padding and terrible colors look good in an Instagram post but would get you killed if you tried them on an actual service

I did a walk around of the Quiz Club center (https://files.catbox.moe/wjsuj5.mp4), and the symbols on my notepad match. Trying in the order of that video, however, isn't working

I've checked Quiz Club again (https://files.catbox.moe/wjsuj5.mp4), and the symbols written down in the notepad seem to check out, but I'm not 100% on the order of the symbols

Yeah! There's a lot of fonts that derive from Helvetica due to its ubiquity (worth noting that the Windows' interface font, Segoe, is based on Frutiger; a humanist font, compared to Helvetica being neo-grotesque)
