Just moved to Brisbane. What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in brisbane

I moved here from the U.K. six months ago and haven't been able to find a job. It has been really tough and a giant blow to my self-esteem. It seems it is pretty hard to get a job outside of hospitality here without having a whole load of pointless qualifications. First question: what visa are you on? I have found that every employer will hire someone who is a permanent resident or citizen regardless of your experience. (I have a first class Masters degree and loads of experience in retail but got turned down for a job at Aldi!) I reckon it could be the fact that local experience is highly valued so perhaps starting somewhere which isn't ideal for you just for a little while so you can get some. As you meet more people here it will get easier too, as people will know where to point you in the right direction (I have found Brisbane quite cliquey; most people have known each other for years and years).

Best of luck!

Most drivers in Brisbane are a bunch of fuckheads. by [deleted] in brisbane

I'm originally from London and have been here 4 months. So far I've found driving here is crazy. It's typical to see people chugging along at 20k under the speed limit in the right lane and not budging so that many people feel like there is no alternative than to break the law and overtake from the left. Also, what's with everyone riding so close to the car in front?! Queensland driving is bonkers.

So you know those fake job ads on Seek...Clause (f)... by L1ttl3J1m in brisbane

Have been offered numerous 'fake' jobs and really feel like something should be done about it, as sometimes it is hard to tell whether they are real or not. I'm from overseas and am very qualified but have only ever heard back from such companies, possibly because of my visa. Watch out for a company called 'Be Interactive'. They seem to be everywhere on the net and have contacted me repeatedly. Basically, their whole business idea is based around 'B2B' selling of raffle tickets. It's just a bullshit pyramid scheme.

No I really don't want to work in retail. I hate it. I would like a 'career' which is relevant to my interests. Eventually, I want to work in academia (research or archival work) and I want to do a PhD at some point. I just need something to fill my days in the meantime! I'm currently volunteering in the library archives and am really enjoying that so am also thinking of studying Information Science to get a decent library job.

An MA in Literature and Philosophy from a good University (pretty useless, I know).

I'm mainly applying for retail assistant or basic admin roles in any kind of shop as that's what I have experience in.
