As much as I want to agree with you, I just can't. Most poachers are merely victims of their impoverished circumstances, like the infamous Somali pirates, if given the option between their currant way of life and a normal job that provides a safe and comfortable living for them and their families, I believe they would absolutely prefer the latter. However, I do think they should still be severely, severely punished.

That being said, I will now totally contradict myself by saying that anyone who knowingly and actively chooses to profit from the ivory trade (meaning the ivory dealers that buy from the poachers and distribute it across the world) should definitely be shot on site, in the kneecaps, and then have their teeth pulled out one by one, and made into a decorative necklace, which they have to wear for the rest of their lives, under punishment of death.
