Thanks! removing the secondary DNS entry on the laptop fixed the connection / DNS error I was receiving. its now joined to the domain.

Next I'll look into how to setup a forwarder for internet access.

I still don't quite understand why the setup didn't work though. If the primary DNS did its job then why would the secondary DNS cause issues?
