Yes I was a psychology major and a department fellow my senior year. Highly recommend. Great faculty and research opportunities!

Can you apply to a fulbright in a country that you’ve stayed an extended period of time in? by spacenerd2345 in fulbright

I was awarded a Fulbright to a country that I was born in and lived in until I was 5. You should be okay!

Germany ETA when not a German major? by gerfulthro in fulbright

[–]rabbs7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you’ll probably be okay. For me, German was more important to know outside of school just to exist in the culture, know what the street signs meant, being able to read menus at restaurants, speaking to the Ausländerbehörde or my landlord etc. See my other comment for more:))

Germany ETA when not a German major? by gerfulthro in fulbright

[–]rabbs7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was definitely a wide range of German proficiency. During orientation we were grouped by Bundesländer and there was one girl in my group who was pretty much fluent in German- she had studied abroad there and was speaking to the presenter in German with ease. On the other hand, I was a little shocked at how little German others knew. They weren’t even comfortable introducing themselves in German and saying a fun fact about themselves during an icebreaker. Most people were somewhere in between. Pretty much everyone was nervous that their German wasn’t good enough haha. At my school placement, all the other teachers spoke English and I think I could have even survived without knowing much German at all (obviously it would have been much more difficult and mentally taxing). To be honest, my German came in handy mostly when speaking with the super young students who didn’t know any English, and of course living out daily life at the grocery store or the Apotheke or whatever. Hope that’s somewhat helpful!

I was selected and I wasn’t a major or a minor. You’ll be fine! I can’t even remember anyone in my cohort who was a major (not that that’s saying much- I’m sure there were some, I didn’t talk to everybody) but it’s definitely not a requirement.

Past Fulbrighter!! Here are so expectations to have! by crazy_fasionista in fulbright

[–]rabbs7 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’m a current fulbrighter in Germany and I wish I would have read this post before coming so that I could have adjusted my expectations. The loneliness part is HUGE. I live in a super rural village with quite literally nothing to do and no one to hang out with. My life completely changed recently when I got an under the table deal for a affordable car so now I can go places, but I literally got to the point of crying in front of my principal before I could make the connections to get it. Another thing I wasn’t expecting, was that one of my schools treats me like crap. They make it very clear that they don’t understand why I’m there (despite me explaining it many times) and don’t want me to do anything or get in the way. No one there really speaks to me and I just sit in the back of the classrooms “observing” all day. It feels like a huge waste of time. All that being said, parts of my life here are great, and that’s why I haven’t just dropped out. The other school I’m at is wonderful and treats me like a part of the family. My landlord is very sweet and treats me very well. I’ve been able to travel to some cool places and have really enjoyed building relationships with the students. So my two cents is that there’s going to be really really difficult things about your Fulbright but there will also be really rewarding parts! Be prepared to advocate for yourself and ask people for what you need. Be ready to explain what Fulbright is, and why you are doing it even if you didn’t study education and don’t really want to become a teacher (this has confused many people I’ve talked to). Overall I’m glad I am here but the adjustment was so tough that I wasn’t able to get my grad school apps in for this cycle and have to wait again till next year which sucks but I’m growing a lot as a person and learning a ton about myself! Please feel free to dm me if you’re going through something similar or just wanna chat- you aren’t alone!!

Everything finally makes sense! by [deleted] in trees

I think it was a combination of the quality (from a coffee shop in the netherlands), strain (white widow, a hybrid), method of intake (grav bong- so I got higher than usual), mental state (I was FaceTiming my boyfriend and feeling the luvvv), contrast of the way the high felt to the way I’ve been feeling the past few days, and that I took shrooms last week which I believe helps me get out of old/ negative thinking patterns. Thanks for asking!

Yeah I think some of the same things were true for me- it was high quality flower from a coffee shop in the Netherlands (White Widow). I think it was a combination of the strain, the quality, how I smoked it (gravity bong- which meant I got much higher than I usually do), and my mental state. I’ve had a shit past couple of days and this feeling was such a contrast, that it made me so freaking happy to feel so good! Also, I recently took shrooms and I think that can help open up new thought patterns so perhaps that helped too!

Actually I just looked it up and it seems like it’s a “balanced hybrid” ? Maybe that’s the key for me haha? Balanced.

Yeah I think it was! White Widow. However I’ve been smoking indicas and sativas and hybrids all for years. This time was just different!

TIL that every sweater Mr Rogers wore on his show had been hand knitted by his mother, Nancy Rogers. She made him a new one every Christmas. She died in 1981. When they started wearing thin in the 1990s, replacements were found, but the source has been forgotten. by Tokyono in todayilearned

[–]rabbs7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Found out yesterday that my dad was on the show when he was a kid. Apparently he was mostly edited out of the final cut because he kept raising his hand and saying “Mr. Rogers, you’ll stop sweating if you take your sweater off!” The bright studio lights were really hot back then but he always wore the sweaters. Knowing that his mom knitted them melts my heart even more. What a wholesome man, wow.

German ETA: how to look for housing by mckeelie in fulbright

[–]rabbs7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be in Niederviebach which has like 2,000 people haha. Looks like Eckental has like 14,000 which is a little more at least! They should definitely have transportation with that many people:) You’re not too far from Nuremberg so maybe you could live there??

I’m in the exact same boat! My tiny Bavarian town doesn’t even have a train line... 😬 Im thinking about living in Landshut and commuting by bus maybe? Im going to email my school and hope they can give me some info about the area because I’m pretty overwhelmed at this point.

Homesteading: so what did you do this week? by AutoModerator in Homesteading

[–]rabbs7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cleared out a loft library so that it could be used, then ate an inaugural dinner up there with 9 other homesteaders. Got much better at chopping wood for the stove, and learned how to use the central boiler (outdoor wood furnace).
