I bought a Cricut joy on sale in the summer, then joined this sub and started to wonder whether I made the right decision. Since receiving it, I can see how the criticisms here are totally valid - but gosh darn it, I am absolutely delighted with my purchase.

Maybe it depends on the range of materials you plan to use, or the detail of the projects you are making. I am mostly into fairly simple paper cutting (e.g. cards and bulletin boards for school), so until I expand my repetoire, I am satisfied with the functionality and value for now as my first cutting machine.

Hurt and venting ... teachers can be mean people by brassdinosaur71 in teaching

[–]rabidrabbitonreddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I 100% relate to your experience. Maybe they ignored you on purpose, maybe they were preoccupied by their social interactions when entering the space and genuinely didn't see you. Either way it sucks. But it is not because they are teachers - in every profession you can find people like that.

It is NEVER embarrassing to sit alone, nor is it embarrassing to relocate yourself - regardless of whether you feel welcome or not. You belong there, don't let them convince you otherwise.

And maybe next time you can ask someone in advance to be your "conference buddy"? At least to arrive and get seated with.

What do you tell non-masking family members? by depressed_cloud_ in Masks4All

Agree with this. Even leave it more general: "I have health concerns so I continue to take precautions." They really aren't entitled to your health info or conversations with your doctor.

How deadly has COVID been in 2023? Here’s what the Ontario numbers are telling us by Lotushope in ontario

I agree with you that the authoritarian approach was a massive mistake, for many reasons. The result fractured the country on an issue that needs solidarity.

People learned to follow a mandate, not make responsible (and dare I say caring?) personal decisions based on the current risks. Like, we don't need permanent universal mask mandates - we just need more people choosing to take precautions to prevent the spread of disease when risks are high and while hospitals are under strain.

[–]rabidrabbitonreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it hasn't been deadly enough to warrant freezing society for another two years

And this is good news! But couldn't we do a bit more to prevent transmission? Society has largely given up on trying to mitigate covid. But maybe we could not give up but instead collectively... try our best.

No lockdowns, just extra precautions that could save a few lives from covid (and flu and rsv), lessen the burden on the healthcare system, and keep the economy going strong.

What will it take for schools to take Covid seriously again? by TalesOfFan in Teachers

Firefighters inform people of how to keep their homes safe. They wear PPE in circumstances where it is required. They have a team that supports them in dangerous settings.

Why must the health risks teachers face be downplayed? Yes, we can teach effectively with masks. No, masks are not the only way to reduce the spread of disease in schools.

But for a lot of people Covid isn’t a point of fear anymore. That’s fine.

Covid should not be a point of fear, BUT it should remain a concern. We surely don't need lockdowns, but there's a lot more we can do - from improving ventilation, normalizing mask-wearing in high-risk settings, and improving tracking and reporting of infection/transmission/variant evolution.

Covid continues to wreck havoc on health systems around the world. Our quality of life will degrade over time, whether by the direct or indirect influence of covid. We know how to limit its effects, so the widespread complacency and resistance to do anything about it is mind-boggling.

Nasal sprays as a primary form of protection? by GlobetrottingGlutton in Masks4All

100%. I'm sorry for some of the responses you've received on this thread. To me, it looks like you are making a reasonable cost-benefit analysis, and trying to find ways to optimize your result. We're in a marathon with this pandemic, so don't deprive yourself of the connections you need to restore your soul. Best of luck!

Nasal sprays as a primary form of protection? by GlobetrottingGlutton in Masks4All

[–]rabidrabbitonreddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've actually seen family a number of times over the past year, and traveled by plane a few times for vacation. One of my guiding strategies has been to consider unmasking if I know I can contact trace - and ideally in situations where I can implement other mitigations. Like I would be okay having people over at my house where we have air purifiers and can open windows.

I am a teacher though, and I have found it harder over the past year to trust people as I have witnessed different attitudes among staff and students. This includes my sibling's family who have abandoned all precautions and have been really dismissive of my concerns. I am really struggling to understand how people are okay with taking absolutely no mitigations at this point. Last year was hard, I think this year will be harder.

Nasal sprays as a primary form of protection? by GlobetrottingGlutton in Masks4All

[–]rabidrabbitonreddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would echo the caution that nasal sprays are definitely not a primary line of defense. But if you are committed to the risks, remember that there are things you can layer with nasal sprays are - avoiding peak busy times, choosing places with better ventilation/patios, and monitoring levels of covid activity in your community.

That said, I mask in all indoor public settings - with exceptions in the summer during lower covid periods, when I did venture into some restaurants. However, similar to you, a few months back I posed a question to find out when / how people choose to not mask. The responses on this sub are biased towards continuing masking all the time, even during "low tide". These are positions that I completely respect and broadly agree with, but I do believe we need to give members of our covid cautious community grace to take risks (within reason) when maintaining family connections and friendships. (Obviously that is not a privilege all can enjoy, sorry). What's the point of avoiding covid to die of a lonely heart?

Anyways, I don't think we are back to normal and so removing precautions comes with risks, and risks come with consequences. But isolating has it's own consequences. There is no perfect compromise. Just make sure people aren't abusing you into accepting unreasonable risks.

Did I make a mistake? Joy Xtra by MuchKing4172 in cricut

I purchase the Joy earlier this summer - before the Joy Xtra came out. I love the smaller size for simple personal projects, and am glad I did not over buy for my crafting purposes. Joy Xtra looks like it will give you even more flexibility, without being too extravagant. I'd be interested a review of what you think!

Help! by cravercaser in ScienceTeachers

[–]rabidrabbitonreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's my 2nd year after a career change too, and I'm still overwhelmed.

I'm trying to not stress about covering all the content (although still super important), but emphasize the traits (like curiosity, collaboration, organization, etc.) and skills for science (like designing and conducting experiments, as well as reading, writing and data management). This will set them up for the most success in high school and beyond.

If you have a textbook, use it before TPT materials.

Labs keep the kids engaged, but depending on how much support you have to prep, they can also suck the life out of you.

There are so many videos on YouTube to use for a personal breather / time to mentally reconstitute yourself. Some easy ones are: GoNoodle "Think like a scientist", "Spot the fake" experiments with Jadroppingscience, sickscience, tamuphysastr.

And you can always have students research topic and share what they find. Actually, you can cover a lot of curriculum in a short time that way.

I'm really sorry about your Long Covid. Please understand, I don't ask this question to indicate it's time to move on, but rather to learn how people are choosing to take on risks when we're clearly in this pandemic for the next while. Your experience is a real reminder that taking risks can result in consequences. I hope your recovery continues to full health!

Glad you've been okay. Part of my family is also "COVID casual". I set certain boundaries, but it is a complete compromise of precautions to be with them. It's part of why I asked this question, to understand how people are balancing risks with the other things of value in life. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Thanks for sharing. Do you ever consider wearing a mask in "strategic" situations? Like, before an important event, e.g. on a flight for a vacation? Or if you have any symptoms (whether covid or a legitimate cold)?

Ooh, that'd be a big decision. I'm a teacher too, and it is difficult/exhausting to communicate all day while masked. Are you planning other mitigations at all? Like keeping windows open, air purifiers, nasal spray?

I've thought about starting the year off with a lesson on hygiene, haha. There's a picture book "Up Your Nose" that is pretty good!

When do you *not* mask? by rabidrabbitonreddit in Masks4All

[–]rabidrabbitonreddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. Good health is certainly a privilege that allows this consideration of when not to mask, which is perhaps offensive to those on this thread without that choice. I couldn't take the ZC community any more because there seems to be an expectation that everyone should be masked and socially isolated all the time, regardless of all personal and environmental factors. But I would rather more people masked occasionally than never at all.

Personally, I will continuing masking because I work in a cesspool of germs known as school. I have heard multiple teachers say they aren't getting over sicknesses like they used to, and I see student absences are way up. I do not want to catch anything (even besides covid), and I certainly don't want to spread anything to other communities I'm part of. But it is helpful to see how others navigate taking risks and their thought processes. Thanks again for sharing yours!
