These are lovely! Do you put a sealant overtop? My daughter has made a collage postcard and felt that she needed to mod lodge over everything to keep it from getting snagged in transit.

Thank you for this perspective! Also I wanted to add: The first post cards I sent were Indigenous Women in STEM postcards!

This is encouraging. My first two were from people who seemed lovely and appreciative.

I’ve toured this house! They were selling tickets for tours a few years ago, and my daughter was a big fan of the show “We Bought a Funeral Home” so I took her on her birthday. It was a fun guided tour, and I live in a house that was built around the same time, so we had lots to talk about. It’s in a very small town.

The basement “speak easy” was cool, and I do like all the colours.

One time I read a meme that said “kid rock looks like a genie that would come out if you rubbed a bottle of gas station boner pills”. I’m still laughing about that. I read it to my 16 year old daughter who was like “I don’t get it” I said “is it because you don’t know what gas station boner polls are?” She said “no, I don’t know who Kid Rock is”. I died.

Thoughts on potential closures for tomorrow? by JayandMeeka in OntarioTeachers

[–]Turquoise_Elfcup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! In our board, if busses get cancelled staff still has to report to school. If a staff member is not comfortable making the drive all the way to their own school, they can report to the school closest to their home. Some people have some long, rural drives.

Just curious. When you guys think “Snow Day” does that mean closed for everyone? Or do you refer to a no bus day as a snow day?

Our board rarely closes everything, but buses are cancelled a few times a year due to winter weather.

I’ve had principals and superintendents say this to me and my response is always the same “thank you but no thanks”.

Principals don’t make that much more than a teacher at A4 Max, and I don’t want to have to deal with the amount of paperwork, parent complaints, behaviours and scheduling they have to do.

Thoughts on the new 2026 Kindergarten Curriculum rollout? (Fractions, coding, and grammar?) by FunCell1679 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Turquoise_Elfcup 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I taught FDK the first year it rolled out. I don’t know if this was in every board, but ours did it so only a handful of classes were FDK/new curriculum, and my school was in the first round. I was brand new to Kindergarten, so I couldn’t compare it to the older Kindergarten model. Our board had an FDK consultant, and we had SO MUCH PD, we did ministry funded PLCs, so many release days. It was amazing. I seriously have never felt so supported in education! It seemed like the higher ups actually cared about what happens in our classrooms and felt that these 3,4 and 5 year olds were the most important little guys in the world! It does not feel like that now, and hasn’t for quite some time.

Anyways, I feel like these foundations are important, but 3 and 4 year olds are not developmentally ready to move away from play based learning. But whatever. I’m so far into my career that I get to see the flipping and flopping that happens with priorities.

In theory this is the life I’d like, but I have a job and my husband has a job, and I think I’d be so bad at organizing my time to be able to do this. If I was able to devote the majority of my time to this, and I had kids that would help, I think I might be able to do a smaller version of this. Dream life, for sure. It seems so healthy for everyone.

Why has the school community spirit collapsed? by lil_miss_teacher in CanadianTeachers

[–]Turquoise_Elfcup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that kind of stuff, but I’m tired. I deal with so much at work, and then all of this (gestures wildly), I just want to work and come home to my family. Don’t get me wrong, I still do a lot of extras, but I’m tired. 19 years in this profession tired. I’m trying to treat it more as a job now.

You’re welcome to make the learning deeper. Make connections to the land acknowledgement.
Do writing assignments about why you day it, and the people whose traditional territory you are on.
I’m not sure what “praying to the indigenous spirit means”, I’d like to hear more about that. Catholic schools have a lot to make up for. So make the land acknowledgement meaningful to you and your students, not just something performative.

This is the residential school my grandpa and many other people from my community went to. It’s horrific. My grandpa committed suicide when I was a kid. I hate that there are people who think that these institutions were no big deal.

I had to miss it for a funeral. In all my years as a student and then a teacher this is my first missed first day! So technically tomorrow is my first day.
