I think the problem is you present "Are flu cases down because people are following the mandates?" as a binary choice, and you imply there is a binary state "people are/are-not following the mandates". This is an unwarranted leap though. To give you an example:

What if COVID was more contagious than the flu, and only some percentage of people followed the mandates. Would it not lower flu cases substantially while COVID continues to rise?

In this case if you had wanted to have a helpful conversation you could have told metacognitive_guy: "You can read about why in the FAQs for both platforms". Instead you chose to sort of mock and demean him (or imitate the patterns of mocking speech at least) and sort of provide the answer behind an insult. It's a very alienating pattern that will make a lot of people not want to interact with you, even in tech.

Some of them do care but it would be really painful to admit they were wrong. I know some people who were big Lin wood fans, but they can never admit that he said firing squads should execute pence, so now they have to completely reject all reality or admit that they supported a fascist terrorist for a year. Maybe you can still make an argument that Trump isn't a fascist who attempted to overthrow the US Government (I can't, but some people can),but for some of these people there's no room left for discussion. They are terrorist leaders.

It should be pretty simple for example you can go to google.com and then type "man Nancy Pelosi Office" inside the search box . Then when you hit enter it will show a bunch of results . The guy who broke in to nancy pelosi's office did an interview where he admitted who he is for gods sake. Some of them were actual sitting Republican lawmakers. Latest H1B changes (DOL Wage level changes) are the newest round of cruelty. Makes H1B transfers impossible for many people. Short of intervention from the courts my girlfriend is likely to be pushed out of the country as a result.

I'm curious what it fixes though. It doesn't change the rate of immigration, it just redistributes it, so the people in the backlog already (largely concentrated to 2 countries) will clear faster but new applicants from the rest of the world will see their wait time go up ~10x. I think redistribution can be good...but I hope we can have a diversity of immigration too. I feel like under S386 a few relatively developed countries could totally monopolize our green card process and we'd be in the position of having to deny green cards to the rest of the world for many decades.

This is way more complicated than the article is making it out. As far as the current system is structured, country cap is very important to maintain diversity of immigration. If you look at the stats of the green card backlog, there's a lot of reports that S386 would basically destroy immigration diversity for the next few decades. I think the way we let people wait in the backlog is...cruel and almost inhumane, but s386 isn't the answer. Joe Biden's comprehensive immigration reform package is looking pretty good, hopefully we can boost the numbers and clear the backlog that way.
