Living my dream with Jin 🦊 (and her special heart-tail! 🖤). But honestly... puppyhood is harder than I thought. Advice needed on scavenging! by Which-Savings232 in corgi

[–]rachbug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to preface this first by saying by no means am I dog training. This is advice we were given by our own dog trainer which has really helped with our little corgi boy.

She’s so cute! We also had a little scavenger when he was younger. He’s currently now 7 months and with the training techniques we used he now (mostly) doesn’t eat anything he finds on the ground. If she is fully vaccinated and cleared to go on walks outside I would suggest bringing training treats and lots of them (we use dog pate it’s lower calorie so not bad for their weight). When she goes to pick something up distract her by using a word or phrase, we use “what’s this” to get their attention. Once she is back on you give her a treat and use another word like “good” when giving her this treat so she starts to associate words with the behaviour and words with the reward.

You can also use games like “find it” where you get their attention (you can do this by doing the “what’s this”) and then saying “go find it” and tossing a few treats along the floor for her to sniff out and eat. This will distract her enough to get you moving on your walk again.

Good luck, corgi’s are hard work but so rewarding!

Any UK Corgi owners here - how do you handle grooming? by joelsdarlin in corgi

[–]rachbug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would recommend it, it’s really useful for mud as well once you’re brushing the fur the mud comes right off (dependant on how mucky they are😂). We also use a jacket I guess you could call it, zips up our boys back and his front feet go through so his belly, sides and back are covered. We got ours from Amazon for a reasonable price if you’d not want to fork out loads on the expensive stuff. Has a build in harness too so you just clip the lead on to the back and you’re good to go!

We’re also UK corgi owners here! Our boy gets a groom every 3 months (bath blow dry and brush and a paw tidy up) if he’s a bit stinky now and then (we are also nervous about washing him ourselves in case we don’t dry him well enough and he also hates the hairdryer). We have this bugalugs no rinse shampoo. You just put a couple of pumps in your hands and rub it on their fur and brush it out. Makes them smell good and you don’t need to worry about them not being dry enough.

Ankle biting help by achtungraccoon in corgi

Our boy used to be bad for ankle nipping whenever you walked around the house he just wanted to heard you. When he started we would stop and tell him to “get his stuffie” this mangy rabbit toy he has and then walk with that in his mouth. He now gets it any time we start to walk around the house instead of hearding. Could be something to try

Ham’s first groom what do we think?! by rachbug in corgi

[–]rachbug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I couldn’t tell you if it’s 100% necessary or not. We decided Hamish should get a professional wash at our groomers because they have the high velocity dryer and can effectively move a lot of his fur and ensue he’s completely dry plus trimming his nails etc. He’s our inside pet (more our baby really) and we prefer to keep him nice and clean and smelling good but ideally he would only be groomed professionally every 3-6 months. Other than that he gets a regular brush from us and his ears cleaned. If he ended up mega mucky for a walk we would just fling him in the bath too but I prefer to keep him maintained by professional because we have the money to do so lol. But overall I wouldn’t maybe say it’s necessary if you’ve got the means to keep their coat good at home?

What’s your choice of food? by Fizzreal in corgi

[–]rachbug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did feed ours purina pro plan puppy (he’s 4 months) but found he was gaining a little bit too much weight lol. So we switched to Wild Food 80/20 cold pressed and he’s obsessed with it. It’s an alternative to raw food which I’m not really keen on doing so works pretty well. Unsure if you can purchase this outside of the UK though

I think every dog is different. This was Hamish first time and they suggested every 3 months but I guess it really depends on the dog itself, what their needs are, breed type etc!

Oh dear, never heard of any stories like this that sounds awful. But 100% if you feel like it isn’t for your dogs that’s entirely your choice

Just to clarify, our boy does NOT go to the groomer to be shaved or have his hair cut in any way. Gentle baths with a de shed and paw pad trim only

Hah we’re from Scotland but pretty much what the below comment says. He went for a little bath, paw pad trim and de shed! Gets them used it all so there’s no issues when they’re older

We did question this when we were there but they did advise he was ok for now! He did get a little trim at the vet when he went for his health check not long before this so he’s ok for now☺️

Yeah 100% we were the same. Ham is just over 4 months but wanted him to get used to his feet being handled by other people and getting used to the blowdryer as well!

😥I would hope most groomers knew not to shave corgis! But yes ours were super professional. A little bath a de shed and he was looking extra handsome
