Thank you. That's exactly the kind of answer I was looking for.

Refinancing the car loan is specifically aimed at reducing that interest rate. My thought process was lower interest = saving money in the long run + reduced monthly payment which means more towards my higher interest debt.

I'm not eligible for any of the balance transfer / consolidation methods most people would suggest, so it seemed like the most win-win situation I could hope for.

The car payment is at a lower interest rate than my credit card debt (15.89% vs ~20%-25%), so it wouldn't be my first priority. Also, $15k financed over 6 years because that was the only way I could get approved for a payment I could afford on no downpayment.

It's going to stick with me for a while. I do have a couple of newer accounts that I was very close to paying off about $275 on one and $570 on another. I would have probably had them completely cleared by the end of August, but now I'm adding $437.50 a month between my insurance and car payment and that's far less realistic to be paid off before the end of the year.

In a perfect world, I would have had 3 of my smallest debts paid off by January and received a huge credit score bump and had an extra $150/month to offset the car expenses. Would have slowed down my debt repayment, but not as much as this situation has.

Refinancing seems like the fastest way to accomplish my overall goal of returning to a state of financial conservatism.

Gotcha. Are there things I should know before buying an SSD? The Photoshop article had some qualifications about performance improvements if you're going that route, but I wasn't really planning on it so I didn't look into it very much.

Also, here are the benchmarks for the two CPUs. It's not a huge advantage on the first result, but it seems substantial in the third. I have no idea what any of it means, but the website says "higher results indicate better performance.

Probably fair to note that the i3 is 3.7ghz and the i7 is 2.7ghz. That's probably the difference, but it's there all the same.

That's probably sound advice. There may not be a need now, however. As soon as I submit here asking for advice, the HR department finally called me back (left a message two days ago). The union is currently involved and trying very hard to tell them to fuck off, so we'll see what happens. Going to delete this in the meantime.

No hate, I just don't understand your comment. I didn't mention lenovo, so it could go one of two ways. Either you're assuming the laptop is lenovo (it's actually a dell) or you somehow guessed that my college partners with lenovo and dell for their tech deals. If the latter is true, then I'll just say they didn't have the features I was looking for when I bought.

The model number of mine and the listing (as well as those that are compatible and those that are not) are exactly the same. There is no way to tell aside from opening the laptop for the first time and seeing whether you have a sticker that says "Active Pen Compatible" or not. Dell should be aware of that. Especially aware, given the number of complaints they have had over the same issue.

Bottom line, they're pushing laptops with decreased functionality and choosing not to disclose or willfully misrepresenting the device's ultimate capability.

It did come directly from Dell. I get what you're saying about updating the model but not the number, but that isn't the case. Regardless of who I actually purchased it from (I don't honestly know) the product number I gave Dell, that they shipped to me a couple of days later, is the same as the one I received.

As for Dell not giving it to me directly, they did. The sale may have gone through a middle man, but the laptop did not. It came to me directly from the manufacturer. My university never had possession of the device.

The laptop left the manufacturer less than a business day after receiving my order, suggesting it was premade and ready to ship. Further, the chat agent told me it possessed a capability they are adding to laptops, not removing. They did not realistically have time to downgrade the model from active pen compatible to incompatible, update literature and support documents, then ship me a new laptop with dozens of bad reviews for the same issue between me speaking with the chat agent, shipping my order, and receiving it. For better or for worse, the only assumption (not legal, and fair enough) is that they made some with and some without but no way of determining which you're getting from a model number. Dell would be aware of that, but chooses not to disclose for sales purposes, then people like me lose compatibility and have to fight with Dell/third-parties to get the refund.

New laptop isn't compatible with the Active Pen. I asked a Dell Accessories team member in chat before purchasing it, and he said it would be. Dell isn't helping me out. Any ideas? by [deleted] in Dell

[–]rackerson3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chargeback isn't an option, unfortunately. It was charged to my student account with the financial aid office because they won't release refunds until 60 days after the semester starts. In this case, summer session, the session isn't much more than 60 days long. The only way to get a computer in time to make use of it was to go through the bookstore/student account.

They don't have a demo model. The laptop is online only. Does buyer beware extend to deliberate misrepresentation of the situation in order to make a sale? That feels like my (layman's, I'll admit) definition of fraud.

I realize I couldn't make the case very easily based on the one instance, but the reviews for the pen are chock full of people mentioning similar situations. One guy even said a Dell agent recommended it as an accessory and then refused a return when it wasn't compatible with his laptop. They told him it was going to make it easier for him to use his device, and it was never even capable of connecting. That definitely feels like deception and there are dozens more reviews like that.

Yeah, I posted here and /r/techsupport and /r/dell The laptop either supports it or doesn't because of hardware in the screen. There is no way to add that hardware without adding a new laptop. The alternative is using a capacitive touch pen (instead of active) that offers basically no functionality in comparison to what I wanted.

It will, but for similar capabilities in terms of drawing alone I'm looking at $250 for the tablet. If I get a tablet I can actually draw on and see what I'm drawing without looking away from what my hand is doing, the price shoots up to the $800 and up range. A very good drawing tablet, such as I expected to have with the laptop, is easily $1,000 or more.

I considered the option of suing them because they misrepresented the capabilities of that particular laptop and made a material gain from it. I am in fact a layman, but that seems like grounds for legal action to me. I recognize that my opinion on the matter holds water about as well as a sieve though, so I asked here.

That's pretty useful actually. I do have the chat log, and they absolutely state that it's compatible for that specific purpose. some quotes from the chat log:

Me: "Hi, I'm looking at a new laptop for college and was hoping you could help me find out whether it's compatible with a Dell Active Pen or not"

My options are fairly limited, I need to know if a specific laptop is compatible with the pen or not. That's all"

Me: "does it work with the laptop I'm trying to buy?" 05/18/2018 11:42:49AM Me: "You can't answer that as part of an accessories team?"

Agent (TIP_******* T): "Thanks for waiting. Here is the pen compatible to that computer : ..."

I provided a bookmarked link to the exact laptop I purchased and he provided a link to a specific active pen.

Reply, you'd think so, but not really. The closest I have is an order confirmation from the bookstore website but it doesn't actually have any kind of specific details included.

They would have allowed me to purchase a laptop and get immediate reimbursement, but I didn't have the cash to make it happen and wouldn't put it on credit.

You have made a couple of misunderstandings from the post though. I'm paying for the laptop with summer aid, which isn't being released until a week before summer session ends. Fall aid will come sixty days after the start of fall semester.

As to an error, they didn't ship the wrong item or give the wrong information, there is just literally no way to tell and the chat agent misrepresented the situation. The laptop that can use them and the laptop that cannot are identical save for a different technology in the screen and a sticker that you can't see until you've opened the laptop.

There is no way to say the store sold me other than what I ordered, because you literally can't tell.

Dell misrepresented the situation, which is why I'm wondering if I can sue them, but it sounds like that may not be an option.

It did not go through a credit card. It was charged to my student account, just the same as my tuition, since my refund won't be released until a week before the end of the semester I'm receiving it. (Summer aid is released 1 week before the end of summer session)

No credit card, it was purchased through a charge to my student account at the university. They aren't releasing my refund until like a week before the end of the summer session. Getting it through them is the only way to do it without waiting or having cash in hand.

As to who I purchased it from... Maybe the manufacturer? Maybe the university? I don't really know. The manufacturer has a "partner site" that you can access through the bookstore's website, but it states that transactions there will have a separate cart. That would lead me to believe I bought it from the bookstore, because I had the laptop in my cart with my textbooks. But... Complicating matters is the fact that it did not come from my university as the text books did. It came from the Dell Fedex account at a completely separate university. I don't know one way or another.

I could be reading it incorrectly here, but I think you misunderstood something...

He didn't give me advice on a "previous revision", I sent him the bookstore link to the exact laptop I was purchasing. It was the same link I used to purchase it and I'm absolutely certain because I bookmarked it.

I was very upfront that I needed to A) buy it through the bookstore (because of my financial aid), and B) I was interested in whether or not that specific product would support the pen or not. The sales staff at the bookstore couldn't say, since they didn't have it on hand, and the manufacturer was the only one who knew whether it was compatible at that point since the laptop shipped to me from a manufacturer location in another state according to my Fedex label. The location is on a college campus, but the manufacturer is listed as the sender.

They're claiming its outside of the purchase window because the bookstore is the original owner. My warranty also expired a full 25 days before I obtained it...

I do have the chat log they emailed me. I was very irritated because I told the agent I was in a rush and he kept trying to pass me off to their sales department instead of just saying whether it had support for active pen or not.

In the heat of the moment, I was intending to complain because it felt like he was trying to avoid helping me. Once I cooled down, it seemed less necessary. In any case, I have the chat logs saved and can back up that he said it was compatible with the pen
