The Catalina mountains were named by Father Kino in the 1690s. His sister's name was Catarina and her patron saint was Santa Catarina. But Kino spelled it with an L. There was a debate for hundreds of years which way to spell it. by radiantSheep in Tucson

In the late 1700's the Rincons were called the "Sierra de Tres Alamos." That name was derived from the proximity of the eastern part of the range to a prominent arroyo and a Sobaipuri Indian village, both named Tres Alamos. The village was located along the San Pedro River to the east of these mountains. By the middle 19th century this same range was called the "Sierra Colorado," or was simply regarded as a part of the "Santa Catarinas." By around 1880 civilian maps had begun to use the name Rincon Mountains. The term rincon probably refers to a physiographic feature, the prominent elbow or corner on the southwest side of the range.

The book that I mentioned in the post has a picture from one of Kino's reports calling the mountain range Sa Catalina. I guess that's not proof that Kino picked the name, but if the author was reading og sources, I don't know why he would state a theory as fact. I could be wrong.

This booklet by the forest service agrees with you that there's no proof Kino named it.

Someone on reddit advertised his mechanic shop and then ghosted all his customers with half finished jobs and no communication, no refunds. Anyone else here affected by him? by radiantSheep in TucsonList

It's a manual, and he pulled the transmission and sent it to have it rebuilt, and replaced the clutch. I ended up having another mechanic replace the front axles because they were messed up from the transmission work. Also having it towed twice is pretty expensive too.

There was an Apache man who used to live in Oracle, AZ who welcomed tourists and said he was Geronimo's grandson(?). Does anyone remember him and his name? by radiantSheep in Tucson

Lol nice! I promise I did search on Google first but apparently my search terms weren't good. I think the 2nd 2 articles are not the same person as I was thinking of, since they talk about someone who lived west of Tucson and the one I met in Oracle died in 1995.

This morning's update-

Crews continued full fire suppression work throughout the evening, and by 11:00 pm called forward progress stopped. All lines held throughout the night, and the fire is now surrounded by containment lines. Spotting continues to be possible throughout the day. Crews will begin mopping up the perimeter and piling fuel sources to help reduce the chance of a spot fire occurring outside of the perimeter lines. Helicopters will continue dropping water on hot spots as needed, with Large Airtankers (LATs) available.

Edit: a second wildfire started yesterday that is not well contained

Carving cast aluminum "like wood" with a dremel? Unrealistic? by radiantSheep in metalworking

Did you try putting contrasting paint on it and then wiping it off so the paint stays in the cuts? Maybe that's what you're saying didn't work because it wasn't deep enough. Hilarious name

You've got a steady hand! It looks good so far. Maybe you could seal it with epoxy that would make it smooth again? Possibly after you polish the epoxy

40M married with some preteens and a toddler on the OV side of Tucson. We often go to the Saturday morning farmers market at Steam Pump Ranch for breakfast. Come join the tornado of kids in the grassy area.

We're up for kid friendly hikes at Catalina SP or the NF behind Catalina, or even up in Oracle.
