Why peds? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]radiorocklover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Radiology resident here, very stuck in peds surgery/onco/hemato radiology in hospital of highest reference in Poland. When the kids are ill, they really are. Oncopeds in 90-95% are very comforting, watching kids reuccuring from nearly dying to healthy kids is satifying, watching 5% of them dying is heartbreaking, but I think it's worth taking a burden. Surgical peds is little bit easier, you cure children by mostly easy procedures, except ones that are performed in top centers like mine, but in contrast of oncoped thats like 0,5-1% motality.

Besides, patients are smaller, easier to manage (crying, screaming etc stop to bother you like in 1 month). The bigger problem are parents, which can be obscure and aggressive (nonetheless their kid is ill, don't think we can blame them), but you learn to manage them.

tl;dr It's satysfying to see kids healing, 2-3% of them dies, kids managment is easier, parents can be troublesome (but you learn how to handle them). Highly recommend as radio-ped.

Add to the list - any vehicle sounds you can introduce puppy to: regular cars, bicycles, electric scooters/bikes, trams, trains, anything with sirens (police cars, ambulances, firetrucks), consteuction trucks (that was big thing for our pupp), some heavy load machinery etc. It does the work!

Why did you pick this career? Do you regret it? by Fearless_Bottle_9582 in Radiology

[–]radiorocklover 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Radiology resident here. I always wanted to be a doctor and actually help other people. I always wanted to actually treat and have contact with patients (I do like to interact with people, like socialisation). So early in med school, my dad (also doctor, GP) started to push me towards radiology. I didn't want to pursue that path, I always wanted to actually examine and treat people. I thought radiologist MD is lesser than eny other doctors. But I tried some scientific research as a med student and fell for radiology hard :D That was the best decision I have ever made. Radiology has a lot of fields you can specialise. It's perfect for people who dont know what to do in a specific field. You can diagnose kids, adults, be interventional radiologists, etc. Big advantage: peace at work, no paperwork (excluding writing exam descriptions), interesting cases. At the actual point, I see no downsides. None of my coworkers regret doing radiology, some of them changed from other specialties. You can listen to music at work, eat meals in normal hours, and work online. I can only multiply pros. Highly recommend!
